IAS couple in MP amassed Rs240cr assets

Bhopal, February 28: According to the Income Tax department's final assessment report, the total wealth amassed by the tainted IAS couple Arvind Joshi and Tinu Joshi is pegged at Rs 240.38 crore.

The report took over a year after the initial appraisal that assessed the amount at around Rs 360 crore in December 2010, ten months after IT sleuths raided the official residence of the Joshis here, officials said.

The final assessment report running into more than 2,400 pages says the duo owned 18 flats worth Rs 18 crore in Assam, besides 387.49 acres of land worth Rs 193 crore in tribal-dominated Mandla, Umaria, Sagar and others parts of MP.

They also possessed plots in MP worth Rs 3.28 crore, flats worth 3.43 crore, a Rs 2 crore flat in Delhi, shares worth Rs 1.1 crore and Rs 4 crore stashed in ICICI bank. The babu couple also had investments of around Rs 15 crore in businesses, officials said.

The Special Police Establishment (SPE) of the Lokayukta had also carried out a raid at the couple's home on December 10, 2010. The final assessment report of the IT department is expected to give a boost to SPE which is yet to file a chargesheet against the tainted couple. The SPE has been waiting for this report to hasten its proceedings in the case.

The Joshi couple, who belong to the 1970 MP IAS cadre, had also served at the centre. Arvind was joint secretary in the defence ministry during the 1999 Kargil war and his wife had worked as deputy secretary in the PMO between July 1, 1988 and January 1, 1990.

Muzaffarnagar, Jun 11: Three persons have been arrested for allegedly using plastic scrap to make jaggery at Bhokaheri village under Bhopa police station here, as official said on Thursday.

 Police raided a jaggery manufacturing unite (kolhu) and arrested three persons on Wednesday, SHO, Bhopa police station Sanjive Kumar said.

Police have registered a case against five persons including the trio that was arrested while two of them managed to escape, he said, adding that two loaded tractor trollies of plastic scrap have been seized.

New Delhi, Jun 8: A 10-month-old girl allegedly lost her life in an accident in West Delhi's Tilak Nagar area, the police said on Sunday.

"The incident took place when the baby was in the compound of the parking area at the ground floor of her residence and the driver of Mercedes Benz was reversing the car," a police official said.

The deceased was identified as Radhika, whose father Rakesh used to work as the security guard in the said residence.

The unfortunate incident occurred at around 3.30 p.m. in the afternoon following which the baby was rushed to Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) Hospital where she was declared brought dead.

The owner of the said Mercedes Benz SUV is identified as Jassbir Singh who is into elevator business. At the time of the incident, his driver Akhilesh was driving the said vehicle.

"The offending vehicle has also been taken into possession and the FSL team is being summoned for inspection. Investigation in this matter is underway," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) West Delhi.

May 12: A Madhya Pradesh Police sub-inspector was fined Rs 5,000 after he performed a daredevil act of balancing himself on two moving cars, copying the famous stunt from Ajay Devgn-starrer 'Singham'.

Manoj Yadav, the in-charge of Narsinghgarh police post in Damoh district, was also warned against any such daredevilry in future, police sources said on Monday.

Sporting shades as the hero of the cop drama film and wearing his police uniform, Yadav got the entire episode video-graphed, they said.

As the video of the stunt went viral on social media, senior police officials took serious note of it as it will send wrong signals to youngsters, the sources said.

Inspector General, Sagar range, Anil Sharma directed Damoh Superintendent of Police Hemant Chauhan to probe the matter.

After an investigation, Chauhan imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on the sub-inspector and warned him not to repeat such mistakes.
