Chennai engineering student hangs self in hostel

Chennai, March 28: A 21-year-old engineering student committed suicide by hanging in a hostel room on the Anna University campus on Tuesday. Police suspect the boy had a failed love affair. S Manivannan, a native of Poppy Reddy Patti in Dharmapuri district was found hanging from the ceiling fan in his room, using a dhoti.

Fellow students informed hostel warden Sheik Mansur, who in turn called police. The Kotturpuram police recovered the body and sent it to the Government Royapettah Hospital for autopsy.

Manivannan used to pen poems and had published a collection titled 'Thai Paal Vaasam'. He used the pen name Apoorva Senthamizhan. Manivannan is survived by his father Selvam, mother Kanchana, sister Sharmila and brother Mathivanan.

Relatives said the family's hopes where on Manivannan after his father deserted the family.

Muzaffarnagar, Jun 11: Three persons have been arrested for allegedly using plastic scrap to make jaggery at Bhokaheri village under Bhopa police station here, as official said on Thursday.

 Police raided a jaggery manufacturing unite (kolhu) and arrested three persons on Wednesday, SHO, Bhopa police station Sanjive Kumar said.

Police have registered a case against five persons including the trio that was arrested while two of them managed to escape, he said, adding that two loaded tractor trollies of plastic scrap have been seized.

Pilibhit, Apr 3: Two men were mauled to death by a tiger in the vicinity of Pilibhit Tiger Reserve here, an official said on Friday.

The incident happened in Richhaula Chowki of Gajraula area in the district on Thursday night when Ninder Singh (50) and his servant Dorilal (28) were sleeping on their agricultural field, Pilibhit Tiger Reserve Deputy Director Naveen Khandelwal told reporters.

The tiger also dragged them for over 500 metres, he said.

The forest department came to know about the incident when they were informed about it by Ninder's brother after which teams of police, district administration and forest department reached there.

The tiger was tranquillised on Friday by the forest department team and will be sent to Lucknow Zoo.

Panipat, Mar 3: A 22-year-old man was charred to death after he came in contact with a live electricity wire while posing for a TikTok video near the Matlaudha railway station here, police said on Tuesday.

The incident took place on Monday evening when Vikas, a resident of Dharamgarh village, climbed a pole over which the wire was passing and posed for the video, police said.

His three friends were standing below when the accident took place.

Vikas came in contact with the wire carrying 25,000 volts current and was burnt, police said.

Police have sent the body for a post-mortem and started investigation into the matter.
