College girl held for parents' murder

April 4, 2012

college_girlChinsurah, April 4: A 22-year-old college girl was detained on Tuesday for murdering her parents because they would not allow her to marry the man she loved, a chilling reminder of the 1991 Sudipa Pal case in which she had poisoned her parents and grandparents because they objected to her relationship with her tutor.

Police say Mousumi Sarkar, an only child, had asked her lover Sk Moidul Alam alias Rippon to "teach her parents a lesson". Rippon allegedly hired four goons from Howrah who accosted Mousumi's father, Mohit, a retired Army officer, on the night of March 18, apparently to force him to accept the relationship. The soldier refused to give in and fought with the intruders, who stabbed and hacked him to death. Then they attacked his wife. The price of the double murder: 30,000.

Mousumi, who was in an upper floor all through the brutal slaying, called police a few hours later to claim robbers had raided the house and killed her parents. Police arrived to a gory scene at the Pandua Khannan address. Mohit and Lata lay soaked in blood.

Hooghly SP Tanmoy Roychowdhury said: "The girl's account appeared unconvincing. She was in the floor above when her parents were murdered on the ground-floor. Though we were suspicious, we didn't accost her immediately. Our suspicions were confirmed when we learnt from a source about her relationship with a Burdwan-based youth, which was the reason for quarrels within the family. When we interrogated the youth, he confessed to his role."

Mousumi made a judicial confession before a Chinsurah magistrate on Tuesday, police said. She has not been arrested yet. Rippon and Rajesh Verma, the extortionist he had allegedly hired, have been sent to 14 days police custody.

Jun 25: A 16-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide at her house in east Delhi and her family members secretly buried her body, which was later exhumed for post-mortem, police said on Wednesday.

The girl, whose family hails from Jharkhand, allegedly hanged herself in a room in her house on Monday, they said.

No suicide note was recovered from the spot, police said.

Her body was exhumed on Tuesday as per the directions of the Sub Divisional Magistrate of the area. The process was carried out as her family members secretly buried her without informing the police.

The post-mortem will be conducted after Covid-19 tests, police said.

The incident took place on Monday. The reason behind her taking the extreme step is yet to be ascertained, they said.

Police said the girl lived with her mother and two siblings. The family hails from Jharkhand and are financially extremely weak. Her father died two years ago, they said.

After the father’s death, the girl's mother along with her siblings took her body to a burial ground and buried her, police said.

The police said the matter came to their notice after a neighbour alerted them about it. Following the information the body was exhumed, they said.

On questioning the girl's mother, she told police that she didn't know that one has to inform police in a suicide case, a senior police officer said.

Inquest proceedings have been initiated, police said.

Mumbai, Feb 11: A 65-year-old woman was allegedly killed by her husband over debt and illness in suburban Powai here, police said on Tuesday.

The incident came to light when Sheela Ajit Lad was found dead by her neighbours at Sukh Shanti Co-operative Society at around 9.30 pm on Monday, an official said.

The victim was allegedly killed by her husband Ajit Lad, who hit her on the head with a heavy object, slit her wrists and strangled her to death, he said.

The accused absconded at around 7.30 pm, leaving a note at the crime scene, saying he was going to commit suicide and had killed his wife because he was heavily in debt and she was suffering from an ailment, the official said.

The childless couple lived alone in the apartment, he added.

"On the basis of the note, we have registered a case of murder against Ajit Lad and have launched a manhunt for him. We have not traced him or found his body as he had mentioned suicide in the note," deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Zone X Ankit Goyal said.
