Woman accused of 13 murders flees, nabbed in one hour

Tumkur, April 6: An alleged serial killer, accused of committing 13 murders, gave policemen the slip on Thursday, while they were escorting her to a court. But she was arrested within one hour.


Prema, alias Shantha, 39, a native of Theerthahalli in Shimoga district and resident of RT Nagar, is accused of killing 13 women with her nephew, Raghavendra, and Sundaresh as her accomplices. Prema ran a brothel in Bangalore, and the trio identified sex workers and robbed them of their valuables, before killing them. Three of the murders were allegedly committed in Tumkur district. All 13 murders were committed between March 2010 and April 2011.


Prema is housed in Central Jail, Parappana Agrahara. On Thursday, Tumkur police brought her for trial to a local court. After the court proceedings, they took her back to the KSRTC bus stand. On Prema's request, her police escorts took her to the toilet in the bus stand. Prema fled the spot, Tumkur SP in-charge Mohan Reddy told TOI.


An alert was flashed and all buses heading out of Tumkur were searched. Prema was found travelling in a private bus to Bangalore at Jas Toll gate within one hour, Reddy said.

Khammam, Jun 29: In an outrageous incident, some youths beat up a monkey and strung it up on a tree to death while also releasing dogs to attack it in Ammapalem village in Telangana's Khammam district.

A video of the heinous incident of animal cruelty has surfaced on social media, in which the monkey is seen hanging by a rope from a tree, desperately flailing its limbs while a couple of dogs attempt to pounce on and torment the hapless simian. After a while, several men are seen in the video approaching the animal with long sticks.

Forest officials have charged one villager Venkateshwar Rao under Wildlife Protection Act along with the other accused and arrested them. They were released on bail on Saturday and are set to be summoned for questioning by forest officials.

Rao had spotted the monkey, which had entered his residence apparently in search of food and beat it with a stick and hung it from a tree with the help of his friend.

In the video of the incident, Rao could also be seen instructing his pet dogs to bite the monkey, which was fighting for its life.

Amaravati, Jul 31: Nine people have died after allegedly consuming sanitiser in Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh today, the police said.

Prakasam district Superintendent of Police Siddharth Kaushal said the people had been consuming sanitiser for the past few days, mixing it with water and soft drinks.

"We are also investigating whether they laced the sanitiser with any other toxic substances," the official said.

"Their family members say these people have been consuming sanitiser for the past ten days. We are sending the sanitiser stocks, being sold in the area, for examination," he added.

Kurichedu in Prakasam district has been under lockdown due to rise in coronavirus cases and hence, liquor shops have also been shut since the past few days.

Habitual drinkers were said to be consuming sanitisers that have alcohol content, apart from illicitly distilled arrack.

The police said two beggars near a temple were the first to fall victim on Thursday night. While one of them was found dead at the spot, another died in the government hospital in Darsi town, they said.

A third person was also taken to the Darsi hospital late on Thursday night after he fell unconscious but he was declared brought dead. Six others who fell ill after allegedly consuming sanitiser, died this morning.

Others who fell ill after consuming sanitiser are undergoing treatment at their residences in the village, the police added.

Behrampur, Jun 7: A migrant labourer spent two days in jungle after allegedly being denied entry to a quarantine centre and his village in Behrampur.

According to a local from the village, no one helped the labourer. "He came from Chennai. He went to the police and block office but no one helped. Then, he went to the jungle."

Later, the police took him to the quarantine centre.

As per the Union Health Ministry, there are 2,608 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Odisha, including 996 active cases, 1,604 recovered/discharged/migrated and 8 deaths.
