Hyderabad, May 2: Residents of Ravindranagar in Sitaphalmandi are spending sleepless nights for the past two months, gripped by a fear that a ‘ghost' is frequenting the area during night.

While most of them are taking shelter in a nearby temple, three other families have already vacated their houses.

At least half a dozen persons reportedly committed suicide by hanging after the rumours of the ‘ghost' started haunting the locality.

Worried over the increasing suicide cases, youngsters formed groups and have begun patrolling the area to trace the evil force, said Y. Kallu, a local resident, on Tuesday. “We have prevented at least five people from attempting suicide, said Sanju Kumar, another resident.

The residents, carried away by superstition, made offerings at Sri Kanaka Durga temple to appease the deity. They also performed rituals at the local graveyard. Some people, to protect themselves from the evil forces, wrote religious slogans on the main doors of the houses and tied religious flags. Sarika, a housewife says: “for the past few weeks, none of the local residents is sleeping at night. We stay in groups fearing that the ‘evil force' could attack them.”
