Bangalore, May 23: A software engineer was allegedly found dead in his car, with his face covered in a polythene bag and body wrapped in adhesive tape in the early hours of Tuesday, near his residence at AECS Layout in Mahadevapura police station limits.

Police said the deceased has been identified as Sreerag (25), from Kozhikode in Kerala. Employed with the Hewlett Packard in the City for the last seven months, he was staying with his friend Vivek Bhasi.

Passersby were surprised to find a parked car with its front door ajar. When they checked, they found Sreerag’s body and immediately alerted the police.

Mahadevapura police rushed to the spot and took stock of the crime-scene. Two forensic teams and a dog squad were pressed into service.

The body has been shifted to Bowring Hospital for autopsy.

Police said Sreerag’s parents, who live in Kozhikode, will be reaching the City Wednesday morning. Sreerag had visited his aunt who happens to live in AECS Layout, over dinner the previous night, but never returned home.

Preliminary investigations reveal that Sreerag was in love with a girl, Jennifer, for the last three months. They are yet to question her.

According to Vivek, Sreerag was a humble person and a teetotaller. “It is difficult to believe that a soft-spoken person like him, who stayed away from controversies, could ever be murdered. The only controversial thing about him was his falling in love with Jennifer,” he said.

Though police suspect it to be a case of murder with a love angle, they have not ruled out the suicide angle.

Police found that though Sreerag’s legs were tied together with adhesive tapes and his head covered in a polythene bag, his hands were free. If he was murdered in this fashion, then Sreerag could have freed himself and would not have died of suffocation.

Or, he might have been killed elsewhere and his body was later placed in the car.

Police also found that the interiors of the car were undisturbed, ruling out any scuffle with the assailants.

Some sleeping pills were also found in the car, which has led to the suspicion that he might have committed suicide. Police said they are waiting for the forensic and autopsy reports.

Mumbai, Feb 11: A 65-year-old woman was allegedly killed by her husband over debt and illness in suburban Powai here, police said on Tuesday.

The incident came to light when Sheela Ajit Lad was found dead by her neighbours at Sukh Shanti Co-operative Society at around 9.30 pm on Monday, an official said.

The victim was allegedly killed by her husband Ajit Lad, who hit her on the head with a heavy object, slit her wrists and strangled her to death, he said.

The accused absconded at around 7.30 pm, leaving a note at the crime scene, saying he was going to commit suicide and had killed his wife because he was heavily in debt and she was suffering from an ailment, the official said.

The childless couple lived alone in the apartment, he added.

"On the basis of the note, we have registered a case of murder against Ajit Lad and have launched a manhunt for him. We have not traced him or found his body as he had mentioned suicide in the note," deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Zone X Ankit Goyal said.

Bareilly, Jan 9: In a bizarre development, a woman has been arrested for inflicting 101 cuts on her sister-in-law in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly district, the police said on Thursday.

The woman was practicing exorcism to cure her father who had been ailing for some time.

The woman, Moni, was helped by her husband Mooli and brother Raju in the act, which happened on Tuesday.

The sister-in-law Renu who suffered the cuts, was given 300 stitches on her face and other parts of the body by the doctors.

Renu has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where her condition is said to be serious.

Moni, 30, has been sent to jail while Mooli and Raju are absconding.

Baradari police station officer inspector Naresh Tyagi said that a complaint had been filed by Renu's brother under section 307 (attempt to murder) of IPC.

"We will record Renu's statements in a day or two once she is stable and in a condition to talk to us. We have sent Moni to jail," the inspector said.

Renu, a resident of Ganghora village in Bareilly, was married to Sanjeev around eight years ago.

Her father-in-law, Jagdish, fell ill a few months ago.

"Accused Moni, who practices exorcism, decided to cure her father by initiating the act. Going by superstitious beliefs, they inflicted as many as 101 cuts on Renu's face and body. It cannot be ruled out that they wanted to sacrifice her to complete the act," police inspector said.

On Tuesday night, the accused had locked Renu's husband and mother-in-law in another room when they tried to stop them from making her a scapegoat.

When the accused trio started inflicting cuts on Renu, she struggled to get out of their clutches and somehow managed to escape from the house.

She had run a short distance when she collapsed and became unconscious. A police constable on patrol reportedly spotted her and she was taken to a district hospital. Once regaining her consciousness, she narrated her ordeal to the police who then informed her parents.
