Professor accused of cutting off wife's lips and eating them

Stockholm, June 1: A professor who believed his young wife to be having an affair allegedly cut off her lips in a fit of jealousy and ate them, a report said today.

"He cut off her lips and ate them," Swedish daily Aftonbladet quoted an unnamed source close to the case as saying.

"He doesn't seem to regret anything. He thinks she is the one who has offended him," the source added.The man, an associate professor at Sweden's prestigious Karolinska Institute whose name was not given, was reportedly being held on suspicion of attempted murder, according to the report.

"She is of course not doing well, neither psychologically nor physically," the woman's lawyer Ingela Ekman Hessius told Aftonbladet.

The lawyer, who was in court today and could not be reached by AFP for comment, told the paper her client had suffered "very serious injuries. The doctors have not yet said whether they can fix this or not."

The attacker, who has now been ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation, reportedly had several children from a first marriage, which had ended only weeks before he married his current wife, a much younger woman.

According to Aftonbladet, he had recently begun to suspect that she was having an affair and had allegedly decided to punish her by disfiguring her.


"He didn't want the lips to be able to be sewn back on," the unnamed source said, explaining why he had eaten them.

Nagpur, Apr 5: A 23-year-old man allegedly committed suicide in Imambada area in Nagpur on Saturday due to financial distress, police said.

Nikhil Gavhane, who worked in a grocery shop, hanged himself as he had taken money from a person and was stressed over repayment, an official said.

"He was depressed since a week," the Imambada police station official said.

New Delhi, Jul 19: At least six people were killed and 20 injured when a bus overturned after colliding with a private vehicle at Agra - Lucknow Expressway in the wee hours of Sunday. According to initial reports, the bus carrying around 40 passengers toppled after hitting a stranded SUV at around 5 am, 122 km from Lucknow.

A police team reached the spot within a few minutes of the accident and rescued the injured with the help of locals. They were rushed to a nearby hospital. “Five passengers were killed on the spot while another died minutes after reaching the hospital,” Hindustan Times quoted Kannauj DSP Amarendra PD Singh as saying.

Around 20 other passengers have also sustained injuries who were admitted to the hospital, the police said. The bus had started from Bihar's Darbhanga and was en route to Delhi. "The private bus was coming from Darbangha and going to Delhi when it hit a car. Both the vehicles came down from the highway," a senior police official told news agency ANI.

Meanwhile, authorities are trying to ascertain the identity of the deceased. UP CM Yogi Adityanath expressed over the loss of lives and directed officials to ensure all help to the victims.

Kochi, Jun 22: A 54-day-old baby suffered brain damage after she was allegedly slapped and thrown on a cot at home by his father in Angamaly municipality of Ernakulam district, police said.

Doctor Sojan Ipe of MOSC Medical College Hospital at Kolenchery said that the damage caused to the brain is serious. The child was admitted with bleeding in the brain on Friday.

On Saturday, 40-year-old pastor Shaiju Thomas, who is the child's father was arrested by the Angamaly police in connection with the incident. He is currently lodged at the Covid first-line treatment centre at Angamaly.

Shaiju has been charged with IPC Section 307 (attempt to murder) and under the Juvenile Justice Act.

According to Angamaly Police, ''the accused was always doubtful of his wife and raised questions over the parenthood of the child. He had slapped the child on multiple occasions. She fell unconscious on Thursday night after a similar attack and was taken to the hospital. We have so far received enough evidence against the accused.''
