More sexual abuse cases surface in Haryana government-aided shelter homes

June 10, 2012

Chandigarh, June 10: It is not just in the Rohtak shelter home where its intimates were abused and exploitated. The Haryana government is now investigating at least four shelters for alleged abuse and torture of inmates. But the Haryana government is busy passing the buck for its oversight that led to owner of the Rohtak Shelter home Jaswanti Devi being awarded the first Indira Gandhi Nari Shakti award.

Just two days after CNN-IBN exposed a horrific tale of child abuse, gang-rape and sexual exploitation at a Rohtak shelter in Haryana, a follows up has revealed another shocker. Now a shelter in Yamunangar, where the rescued girls were sent, is under the scrutiny for sexual harassment.

City magistrate Puja Chavriya says the administration received information of abuse at the home. She has begun investigations, and is to present her report shortly.

It's clear that Rohtak is not an isolated case - there is a pattern of abuse at several shelter homes. There are four homes under investigation, but it could just be the tip of the iceberg.

Shelter homes currently being investigated are Apna Ghar in Rohtak, Bal Kunj in Chachraulli-Yamunanagar, Royal in Hansi, Suparna Ka Angan in Gurgaon.

There was systemic failure in Haryana in terms of monitoring and supervision of shelter homes. The problem is not just limited to Rohtak. It has spread far wider. On the backfoot, the Haryana government in the meantime is busy playing a blame game.
