Bangalore cops crack ATM van dacoity

Bangalore, Jun 15: Police claim to ha­ve cracked the sensational he­ist of Rs.1.91-crore from a vehicle carrying cash to load an ATM at RT Nagar, after arresti­ng five men, part of an all-India gang.

The 13 men teamed up at the Arthur Road Prison in Mumbai, formed the gang, and hatched the plot, police said. They are on the lookout for the eight others who are said to be in possession of a big part of the loot.

On May 14, a van carrying Rs 1.91 crore money belonging to the Corporation Bank to fill in the ATMs’ was attacked and and the money was looted.

Of the five arrested, Fuzail Ahmed Sheik, 26, is from Mumbai and is accused in a dacoity ca­se there, while Karu­na­kara from Hassan is facing ch­a­rges of robbery and dacoity in Mumbai and Nasik. Jay­ap­rakash and Santosh Kumar from Be­l­t­hangadi, are accused in a dacoity case in Mumbai and Mahesh of Kodagu, is an accused in a daco­ity case in Mulki, Dakshina Kannada.

The police have recovered Rs 32.15 lakh cash, gold jewellery worth Rs 3 lakh, a car and other valuables, in all worth about Rs 50 lakh from their possession.

Police Commissioner B G Jyothiprakash Mirji told mediapersons that the 13 men were serving sentences at the Arthur Road prison between 2005 and 2008, when they teamed up. The gang members hailed from Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Once out on bail, they ke­pt in touch.

Sources said the RT Nagar dacoity was meticulously planned. Three of the gang members rented a house in the locality for about two months. They kept a watch on the movements of the ATM cash vehicle.

Once the final action plan was ready, the rest of the team joined in. They got two cars for the purpose. One that was found aband­oned on the day of crime was stolen from Maharashtra, and the other that police seized from one of the five arrested, was from Gujarat.

Driving in two vehicles,the gang got the cash-carrying vehicle sandwiched between them, intimidated the men escorting the cash, and assaulted them. In the ensuing melee, they sped away with the huge cash bounty.

Jun 25: A 16-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide at her house in east Delhi and her family members secretly buried her body, which was later exhumed for post-mortem, police said on Wednesday.

The girl, whose family hails from Jharkhand, allegedly hanged herself in a room in her house on Monday, they said.

No suicide note was recovered from the spot, police said.

Her body was exhumed on Tuesday as per the directions of the Sub Divisional Magistrate of the area. The process was carried out as her family members secretly buried her without informing the police.

The post-mortem will be conducted after Covid-19 tests, police said.

The incident took place on Monday. The reason behind her taking the extreme step is yet to be ascertained, they said.

Police said the girl lived with her mother and two siblings. The family hails from Jharkhand and are financially extremely weak. Her father died two years ago, they said.

After the father’s death, the girl's mother along with her siblings took her body to a burial ground and buried her, police said.

The police said the matter came to their notice after a neighbour alerted them about it. Following the information the body was exhumed, they said.

On questioning the girl's mother, she told police that she didn't know that one has to inform police in a suicide case, a senior police officer said.

Inquest proceedings have been initiated, police said.

Thrissur, Jun 11: Volunteers of People for Animal Welfare Services rescued a dog that had its mouth sealed with insulation tape around it for two weeks in Ollur of Thrissur district.

The dog has now been shifted to an animal shelter home.

Recently two elephants died in Kerala. One pregnant elephant died after consuming crackers wrapped in some fruits in Palakkad.

Another elephant died in Malappuram after it was found seriously injured in North Nilambur forest range of the district.

Kozhikode, Jun 26: A man, who had returned from Bahrain on Thursday and has been under quarantine at his house in Villyapallai near here, has been stabbed on his arm by an unidentified person.

Police sources said the assailant, with a masked face, had ransacked the man's house by break-opening the door at midnight lat night and stabbed Lijeesh on his arm and fled from the scene.

The nearby residents took Lijeesh to a nearby hospital and was put back on quarantine.
