Parents sold teen into flesh trade for Rs 10k

Nagpur, June 16: Lakadganj police on Wednesday evening rescued a bruised and battered 16-year-old victim of human trafficking from city's notorious red-light locality Ganga Jamuna. The girl, a native of Kota in Rajasthan, was sold to the flesh trade racket for Rs 10,000. In city's brothel, she was forced to entertain clients or else starve and face torture.

Her parents, in connivance with flesh trade racketeers from red-light locality, had sent the girl into prostitution. Police have registered an offence against the parents Babarao Chaitrawat and Munnibai along with a woman identified as Jantabai, after recording statement of the girl. Shockingly, the girl was told by her parents 'to work hard' when she was leaving for Nagpur with Jantabai who paid the money to parents.

The two-month ordeal of the girl came to an end in a rather dramatic way after a customer under influence of liquor alerted the police control room about the teenager. Sheena (name changed) had expressed her plight to the customer. Police said Sheena claimed there were two other teenagers along with her in the brothel but are yet to be rescued. Sources claimed girl's body bore several injury marks. She also told the police that the brothel-owner would force her to engage in prostitution through grave threats and relentless abuse.

Senior inspector R Unawane of Lakadganj police station said the girl had been kept in government shelter home. Her medical examination has been also done. "We are now trying to nab the culprits," said Unawane.

Amaravati, Jul 31: Nine people have died after allegedly consuming sanitiser in Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh today, the police said.

Prakasam district Superintendent of Police Siddharth Kaushal said the people had been consuming sanitiser for the past few days, mixing it with water and soft drinks.

"We are also investigating whether they laced the sanitiser with any other toxic substances," the official said.

"Their family members say these people have been consuming sanitiser for the past ten days. We are sending the sanitiser stocks, being sold in the area, for examination," he added.

Kurichedu in Prakasam district has been under lockdown due to rise in coronavirus cases and hence, liquor shops have also been shut since the past few days.

Habitual drinkers were said to be consuming sanitisers that have alcohol content, apart from illicitly distilled arrack.

The police said two beggars near a temple were the first to fall victim on Thursday night. While one of them was found dead at the spot, another died in the government hospital in Darsi town, they said.

A third person was also taken to the Darsi hospital late on Thursday night after he fell unconscious but he was declared brought dead. Six others who fell ill after allegedly consuming sanitiser, died this morning.

Others who fell ill after consuming sanitiser are undergoing treatment at their residences in the village, the police added.

Kochi, Feb 6: A 46-year-old Thailand national was allegedly raped by two men here, following which they were arrested, police said on Thursday.

The accused hailing from a north Kerala district have been arrested on the basis of a complaint lodged by the woman.

Police said the accused-- Mohammed Insaf and his friend Ansaruddin from Kondotty in Malappuram district were arrested after recording the statement of the victim.

The woman from Thailand had been a Facebook friend of Insaf for the last seven months after she enrolled her child in a school in Malappuram district.

The woman who came from Bangkok recently to visit her child and was staying in a hotel here.

When Insaf came to meet the woman, he was accompanied by his friend Ansaruddin and both allegedly raped the woman at the hotel room, police said.

All formalities including medical examination of the woman were completed, police said.

The accused will be produced before the court on Thursday, they added.

Nagpur, Feb 19: The Central Bureau of Investigation said that it has arrested a former employee of Union Carbide Bhopal, who was absconding since 2016.

A senior CBI official said on Wednesday that the agency sleuths arrested S I Qureshi from Maharashtra’s Nagpur on Tuesday, who was convicted by a local court here in connection with the Bhopal gas tragedy case.

The official further said that he had been absconding since 2016.

He added that the convict would be produced in a district court.

On December 3, 1984, forty tonnes of methyl isocyanate leaked from the Union Carbide pesticide factory and settled over slums in Bhopal

A Bhopal court convicted eight people in 2010 to two years each in jail over the gas plant leak that killed thousands of people.

The eight convicted included the Chairman of the Indian arm of the Union Carbide (UCIL) Keshub Mahindra, Managing Director V P Gokhale, Vice-president Kishore Kamdar, Works Manager J Mukund, Production manager S P Chowdhury, Plant superintendent K V Shetty and Production Assistant Qureshi.

The CBI had taken over the Bhopal gas tragedy case on December 12, 1984.
