Bhubaneswar, June 22: The 19-year-old Dalit rape victim of Pipili died on Thursday after remaining in coma for more than six months with her father demanding capital punishment for the culprits.

She died of septicaemia, severe respiratory and cardiological complications, Dr BN Maharana, emergency officer of Cuttack's SCB Medical College Hospital, told reporters.

The girl, who was raped and an attempt made to strangulate her on November 28 last year, was admitted at the medical college hospital on January 11 following intervention of Orissa High Court.

The case relating to assault on the girl was being probed by the Crime Branch of Odisha Police which had so far filed four charge sheets against eight people, including a dismissed police inspector and three doctors.

While four persons have been arrested till date, the policeman and doctors have not been taken into custody.

The body was handed over to the family members of the girl after post-mortem. The victim's father Babuli Behera of Arjungada village under Pipili police station of Puri district was given a cheque of Rs 10 lakh by the state government as financial assistance to the family.

"I demand capital punishment for the culprits. We will seek intervention of the prime minister," Behera said.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who was in Puri to witness Lord Jagannath's car festival, condoled the death of the teenager and assured the victim's parents that culprits would be punished.

The death of the girl came two days after Orissa High Court, which monitored her treatment, directed the state government to continue providing best available treatment to her and gave liberty to petitioner advocate Prabir Das, a social activist, to approach the court in case he felt any negligence in her treatment.

The rape had triggered a statewide outcry and led to the ouster of Pipili MLA and the then Agriculture Minister Pradip Maharathy from the Naveen Patnaik ministry following allegations about his role in the incident.

Police officials and doctors of Pipili were slammed for the manner in which the case was handled. While police was charged with shielding the accused, the victim's father alleged that the doctors had given anti-venom injection to the girl though she she was not a snake-bite patient.

Doctors of the Capital Hospital and SCB Medical College and Hospital had come under severe attack from different quarters for allegedly not providing immediate treatment to the girl, who had been discharged hurriedly.

Bowing to public outcry, the state government had also ordered a judicial inquiry into the incident.

With the high court and Orissa Human Rights Commission voicing concern over incident, the opposition Congress and BJP had demanded a CBI probe into the incident.

Meanwhile, CPM staged a demonstration demanding arrest of the persons including politicians, police and doctors responsible for the situation which led to the death of the girl.

"We will launch a statewide agitation demanding justice for the girl," said Haladhar Sethi, president of the Odisha SC, ST Development Council.

Opposition parties including Congress have demanded a CBI probe into the entire incident.

Farukkhabad, Jan 14: In a shocking incident, a new-born baby was mauled to death by a dog inside the operation theatre (OT) of a private hospital in Farukkhabad on Monday.

Family members of the baby boy said that they noticed the hospital staff shooing a dog away from inside the operation theatre and soon after, they were told the baby boy, born just two hours ago, was dead.

The family members said that they found the baby's body on the floor and it had deep gashes around the neck and other parts of the body.

District magistrate Manvendra Singh has ordered an FIR and the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Chandra Shekhar said the hospital has been sealed and an inquiry ordered into the incident.

Sources said that the hospital where the incident took place was unregistered and was being run adjacent to a government hospital.

According to the FIR lodged with Sadar Kotwali police, the infant's father Ravi Kumar said he had admitted his wife Kanchan in the hospital on Monday and she was taken for a C-section to the operation theatre.

After the delivery, Kanchan was shifted to the ward but the family was told that the baby would be shifted later.

An hour later, the family was informed that the baby had died.

The family members then saw the hospital staff trying to chase a dog out of the operation theatre.

The family members forced their way into the operation theatre and found the infant lying on the floor with several injuries on the neck.

The police said that the baby's body has been preserved for examination and post mortem.

The FIR has been registered against Dr Mohit Gupta, and some of the staff members who were present during the delivery.

The hospital owner, Vijay Patel, however, feigned complete ignorance about the incident and said that he had been told that the baby was born dead.

Bareilly, Jan 9: In a bizarre development, a woman has been arrested for inflicting 101 cuts on her sister-in-law in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly district, the police said on Thursday.

The woman was practicing exorcism to cure her father who had been ailing for some time.

The woman, Moni, was helped by her husband Mooli and brother Raju in the act, which happened on Tuesday.

The sister-in-law Renu who suffered the cuts, was given 300 stitches on her face and other parts of the body by the doctors.

Renu has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where her condition is said to be serious.

Moni, 30, has been sent to jail while Mooli and Raju are absconding.

Baradari police station officer inspector Naresh Tyagi said that a complaint had been filed by Renu's brother under section 307 (attempt to murder) of IPC.

"We will record Renu's statements in a day or two once she is stable and in a condition to talk to us. We have sent Moni to jail," the inspector said.

Renu, a resident of Ganghora village in Bareilly, was married to Sanjeev around eight years ago.

Her father-in-law, Jagdish, fell ill a few months ago.

"Accused Moni, who practices exorcism, decided to cure her father by initiating the act. Going by superstitious beliefs, they inflicted as many as 101 cuts on Renu's face and body. It cannot be ruled out that they wanted to sacrifice her to complete the act," police inspector said.

On Tuesday night, the accused had locked Renu's husband and mother-in-law in another room when they tried to stop them from making her a scapegoat.

When the accused trio started inflicting cuts on Renu, she struggled to get out of their clutches and somehow managed to escape from the house.

She had run a short distance when she collapsed and became unconscious. A police constable on patrol reportedly spotted her and she was taken to a district hospital. Once regaining her consciousness, she narrated her ordeal to the police who then informed her parents.
