New Delhi, June 23: A man has been arrested for harassing a woman by sending her obscene texts and telephone calls for two years, police said. Police describe the accused, Nadeem Mirza, as a "psychic stalker" and it was because of his behaviour that the victim had to change the city along with her family.

Mirza (26), a graduate from Jamia Millia Islamia, was arrested by the north district police on Thursday from Turkman Gate. Mirza runs a mobile repair shop and was held after technical surveillance, said Sindhu Pillai, deputy commissioner of police (north).

"The psychic stalker has been held for sending sleazy, and obscene SMS to the woman and her family for over two years," she said. The complainant, a PhD scholar of Delhi University approached police on June 7 complaining against an anonymous person who was sending her objectionable text messages. "The accused would call the complainant's brother and threaten him of dire consequences if the matter was reported to police. Due to this persistent mental harassment, the girl's family shifted her residence to Sahibabad in UP," she added.

The caller had frequently changed his phones but all the call locations were traced to Turkman Gate in north Delhi. "The accused had earlier met the sister of the complainant and taken her cell number. In 2010, he had tried to make lewd advances towards the complainant but she had strongly objected," Pillai said.
