Kalyan, July 9: A 37-year-old autorickshaw driver was arrested on Saturday for raping his friend's wife and keeping her hostage for six days. The driver had told his victim that he would make public nude pictures of her shot by him.

Accused Rajendra Gaud is a resident of the Govindvadi area in Kalyan (west). According to officials from the Mahatama Phule police station, the victim's husband was arrested in March in an attempt to murder case. She had approached Gaud for help to obtain bail. Gaud, on the pretext of arranging for sureties, took the victim to Mohane, where he has a house. Gaud allegedly served her juice laced with sedatives and then raped her. Gaud also took nude photos of the victim and began blackmailing her.

"Gaud raped the victim several times after securing bail for her husband. Recently, he called her again to his Mohane home and raped her while keeping her in his custody from July 1 to July 6," said inspector Sunil Dhanawade from the Mahatma Phule police station. "When the victim did not return home on July 1, her husband filed a missing person complaint with the police."

After returning home on July 6, the victim narrated the incident to her husband, who then lodged a complaint with the police. On Saturday night, cops traced Gaud and booked him for rape and blackmail. The accused has denied all the charges against him. Cops are yet to recover the photos taken by the autorickshaw driver.

Mumbai, Feb 11: A 65-year-old woman was allegedly killed by her husband over debt and illness in suburban Powai here, police said on Tuesday.

The incident came to light when Sheela Ajit Lad was found dead by her neighbours at Sukh Shanti Co-operative Society at around 9.30 pm on Monday, an official said.

The victim was allegedly killed by her husband Ajit Lad, who hit her on the head with a heavy object, slit her wrists and strangled her to death, he said.

The accused absconded at around 7.30 pm, leaving a note at the crime scene, saying he was going to commit suicide and had killed his wife because he was heavily in debt and she was suffering from an ailment, the official said.

The childless couple lived alone in the apartment, he added.

"On the basis of the note, we have registered a case of murder against Ajit Lad and have launched a manhunt for him. We have not traced him or found his body as he had mentioned suicide in the note," deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Zone X Ankit Goyal said.
