Caught on camera: Girl steals diamonds worth Rs 25 lakh from Jaipur showroom

August 25, 2012

caughtJaipur, August 25: The Jaipur Police are looking for a 20-year-old girl who stole diamonds worth Rs. 25 lakh from a jewellery shop in Vaishali Nagar area and vanished. The accused, Jyoti, showed her remarkable sleight of hand and stole seven pieces of jewellery at a time when the shop was filled with customers and attendants.

Jyoti had been working at JKJ Jewellers for 15 days. The police are now analysing the footage from the CCTVs which captured the act.

In the first part of the footage, Jyoti is seen sitting quietly behind the counter at the shop and as soon as her co-worker goes out she makes a cunning move, artfully pocketing some diamonds.

A little later, she gets a second chance. As other co-workers go out for lunch, she first takes some pieces of jewellery out of a box and keeps them enclosed in her palm all the while maintaining a calm and deceptive demeanour.

Then in an audacious move, she quickly puts the diamonds inside her t-shirt. She makes no hurried movements, but quietly gets up and tries to walk out of the showroom.

When the security guard stops her, the girl tells him that she is going to buy medicines. The guard insists she take permission first from the owner, but she tells him the owner is busy with some customers and she would take only a few minutes. She then makes a quick exit.

The security man waited for 10 minutes, but Jyoti didn't return. He then raised an alarm.

"When we did a stock checking after she walked out, we found 7 pieces of jewellery missing , of which three were rings and four ear rings made of solitaire diamond. She took about Rs. 25 lakh worth of jewellery," said Kailash Mosun, partner, JKJ jewellers.

Jyoti had joined this jewellery showroom only a fortnight back. When the police examined her documents they found them to be fake, but the roll number of her school leaving certificate helped them uncover her real identity.

"She gave an ID card with a fake address and the owners did no verification on her. Still we managed to trace some of her family in Delhi," said Vinod Kumar, Investigating officer, Jaipur Police.

The police found out that Jyoti's father is dead and her mother is remarried; her stepfather is a taxi driver in Delhi. During the interrogation, her stepfather said they had not seen their daughter for eight months.

He also told the police that in the first week of August, Jyoti called him and asked for money. He transferred the money into the account of a male companion, Subhash, believed to be from Chandigarh.

The police now believe that Jyoti is not a lone operator. Verifying her antecedents, they found she had taken a room on rent in Jaipur on the August 1 with two other male companions whom she said were her brothers. They vanished along with her on the 18th.

May 11: Two youths allegedly gang-raped a teen and then hacked to death her 11-year old brother, who had seen their act, in a bid to hide their crime, at a village in Uttar Pradesh's Etah district, about 300 kilometres from here.

Police sources said that two youths, resident of the same village, barged into the house of the teen, when she was alone, and allegedly gang-raped her.

The victim's minor brother suddenly came into the house and protested after he witnessed his sister being sexually assaulted, sources said. The youths allegedly strangled the minor with a towel.

The alleged culprits, who hailed from influential families, 'forced' the victim's parents to bury their son and warned them against approaching the cops.

The parents, however, gathered courage and met senior police officials in Etah on Sunday after a case was registered in this regard. Police said that the body of the minor would be exhumed and a postmortem examination would be conducted.

Warangal, May 26: A 26-year-old man from Bihar was arrested here for murdering nine people by throwing them into a well to cover the murder of a woman, police said on Monday.

Dr Ravinder, Commissioner of Police (CP), Warangal, said that the bodies were recovered on May 21 and May 22 from the well. Investigation has revealed that the accused, Sanjay Kumar Yadav, killed all of them to cover up the murder of Rafiqa, with whom he had a relationship.

He said that Yadav got acquainted with a person named Maqsood and his sister-in-law Rafiqa. "Slowly, he came close to Rafiqa and started living together with her three children. Yadav tried to misbehave with Rafiqa's 15-year-old daughter. Rafiqa did not like this and threatened to lodge a complaint against him," Ravinder said.

"Then, Yadav planned to kill Rafiqa in order to live with her daughter. Yadav promised Rafiqa to marry. They boarded a train to West Bengal from March 7. Yadav mixed sleeping tablets in the food packet and later strangulated her, and threw her body outside the train," he said.

According to police, Yadav later came back to Warangal but Maqsood's wife Nisha started questioning him about the whereabouts of Rafiqa.

"Nisha threatened to lodge a police complaint against him. With a premeditated motive, from May 16 to May 20, he visited Maqsood's family who stayed in a gunny bag factory," he said.

Yadav purchased sleeping pills from Warangal and mixed in the food on the birthday of Maqsood's elder son on May 20, police said.

"Maqsood and his five family members were living there. Yadav mixed sleeping pills in the food and later they consumed it. Maqsood's family friend Shakeel was also there. Then, he went to the first floor of the factory where two labourers were staying. He mixed sleeping pills in their food too. He suspected that they may get up and create a problem. To cover up the murder of Rafiqa, he killed nine people," Ravinder said.

At around 12:30 am, Yadav woke up and saw that everyone is asleep, according to police.

"Then, he used the gunny bags to drag all the nine people into the well. He threw the gunny bag one by one into the well," Ravinder said.

According to the police, six teams were deployed to investigate the case.

"Yadav has been arrested now and will be taken to police custody. We will collect all evidence and ensure that he gets maximum punishment for this offence," Ravinder said.

Yadav will be released by court saying that he is mentally sick and he did not kill 10 people intentionally.
