Chennai, September 3: Tracking irregular activity from her mobile phone, a special team of Chennai police nabbed ‘serial- bride’ Shahanaz Ismail at the Majestic bus terminus in Bangalore. The woman, believed to have duped at least eight men from the State into marrying her and then taking some money off them, was on the run from the cops and would have left the Garden City, if the cops hadn’t closed in on her. “She was standing at a platform and was about to board a bus, when our SI spotted her,” said a police source.

In fact, the much-married woman looked very different from the youthful 25-yearold from the wedding photos, added the policeman. “We watched her for a while and finally a team member approached her and made casual inquiries. Once she slipped up nervously, we nabbed her,” confirmed the source. After they made the arrest at 8.15 pm on Saturday, she was brought back and interrogated at the Shastri Nagar Police Station on Sunday.

The search for Shahanaz began a while ago, after one of the duped men — Saravanan from Adyar — lodged a complaint that she had decamped with Rs 25,000 of his money and a two- sovereign gold chain. The clinching point that made police suspect a pattern was that she had promised to marry him as soon as she returned from a wedding in Vellore.

After her picture began to do the rounds in the media, four other men came forward with similar complaints — two of whom had proof that she had married them and then decamped with their money. During interrogation, Shahanaz claimed that she was 25 years old and had borne a child to a man from her village in Kalinjur, when she was in Class X.

After she saw an ad for a store attendant’s job at a supermarket in Vepery, she relocated and worked there till 2007. After this, she married an art director named Rahul in Tiruchy, before separating from him within six months. She eventually returned to the supermarket’s owner Shamsuddin with a sob story of domestic violence and torture and allegedly won him over.

Pretending to depend solely on his “love and support” she borrowed Rs 1.85 lakh from him to buy some land. He never heard from her again, but didn’t file a complaint as he didn’t want any problems, said police. She explained to cops how she found a job in a BPO in Taramani, through which she came into contact with all the other men she “married or carried on with”, as a senior cop put it.

Though she was remanded in custody at the Saidapet court, police said independent cheating cases would be registered against her at Vepery, Porur, Mambalam, Pulianthope, Mangadu and Thiruvottriyur.

Additional Superintendent of Police Vinod Kumar Pandey, who is heading a Special Investigation Team in the case, said the charge sheet was submitted on Wednesday.

"There is ample proof against the five accused persons, and the charge sheet was prepared based on those evidences," he said on Thursday.

The 23-year-old Unnao rape victim, who was airlifted to Delhi and admitted to Safdarjung Hospital with 90 per cent burns after being set on fire, died following a cardiac arrest on December 6, 2019.

The woman was set afire by five men, including two of her alleged rapists, on December 5 morning when she was going to Rae Bareli to attend a court hearing in the rape case filed by her.

Hyderabad, MAY 28: A three-year-old boy who accidentally fell into a newly drilled open borewell in Telangana's Medak district was found dead in the early hours of Thursday, police said.

The kid's body was retrieved at around 4 am after a nearly 10 hours' long rescue operation involving different agencies, they said.

"He died a while before we evacuated him, most likely due to the mud that covered him from the top sealing off necessary oxygen supply, " Medak District Superintendent of Police Chandana Deepti told PTI.

The boy had accidentally slipped into the 120- feet borewell at around 5 pm on Wednesday in an agricultural field located in Papannapet mandal of the district when he was walking with his grandfather and father, police earlier said.

As part of rescue efforts, a parallel trench was dug along the borewell hole with the help of earth excavating machines and oxygen was supplied into it, but the efforts went in vain as the boy's body was found stuck at a depth of around 25 feet, the police said.

Apart from the police, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel were also involved in the rescue operation.

The borewell into which the child fell was one among the three dug by the family since Tuesday night to try and find water for their fields. But none of them yielded any water, police had said.

Patna, Jul 17: A 15-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a security guard at the Covid-19 quarantine center of the Patna Medical College Hospital where she was admitted after being rescued from a railway station, police said on Thursday.

The accused, Mahesh (40), was arrested on Wednesday night after being booked under the POCSO Act and other relevant IPC sections by the Pir Bahore police station, according to Arti Jaiswal, the in-charge of the women's police station here.

“The accused is being sent to jail while the victim will be undergoing medical tests on Thursday, as is the norm for all sexual assault survivors," Jaiswal said.

The girl had run away from her home in Nalanda district more than a week ago and reached Barh railway station on the outskirts of Patna to catch a train for Kolkata where her father is a daily wage-earner, police said.

She was spotted by Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel who informed the child helpline. The child helpline personnel, taking note of the girl’s tender age and her disturbed frame of mind, convinced her not to undertake the journey and brought her to the hospital’s quarantine ward for COVID-19 suspects as a precautionary measure, they said.

On the night of July 8, a few hours after the girl's arrival at the hospital, she was caught hold of by the accused inside the bathroom and allegedly raped. The accused also threatened her with dire consequences if she spilt the beans and, as per the FIR, kept harassing her sexually.

She finally decided to speak up when another girl, carrying a mobile phone, was similarly brought to the hospital by child helpline a couple of days ago. Using the fellow inmate’s phone, she narrated her ordeal to the helpline personnel who informed the police.

“Her Covid-19 test report is negative. After her examination, for the sexual assault, by a six-member medical board is over, she will be sent to a shelter home by the child helpline," Jaiswal said.

Meanwhile, state women’s commission chairperson Dilmani Mishra strongly reacted to the incident and said, “We are waiting for the medical reports of the girl. We will ensure that justice is done in the matter.”
