Father kills himself after daughter gangraped by upper-caste men

September 23, 2012
haryanaHisar, September 23: Protestors from the Dalit community on Sunday demanded the arrest of seven upper-caste men who allegedly abducted and raped a 16-year old girl and then circulated an MMS clip of it in Haryana's Dabra village near Hisar.

The incident had occurred on September 9 but came to light 10 days later when the victim broke down and told her parents.

The girl's distraught father committed suicide on Thursday. The family and the community had refused to cremate him till arrests were made. The body was finally cremated on Sunday after police made one arrest.

“The men gangraped her, filmed the crime and threatened to kill her if she exposed them. They are all wanted for murder. The girl's father was forced to take this desperate step,” victim's uncle said.

Satish Balan, Superintendent of Police, Hisar, said, "A man has committed suicide after her daughter was gangraped. But, we have not received any complaint regarding the rape."

Meanwhile, National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has promised a probe into the incident.

“NCPCR will send a team to probe into the case. Her father was forced to commit suicide due to no support from the administration and the civil society. I talked to DGP of the range and asked him to expedite inquiry. We are also sending our team tomorrow,” NCPCR’s Nina Nayak said.
