Asha Bhosle's daughter Varsha commits suicide by shooting herself

New Delhi, October 8: Varsha Bhosle, daughter of playback singer Asha Bhosle, has committed suicide by shooting herself, reports said. Varsha was a political columnist and journalist based in Mumbai.

Varsha has herself sung playback for some Hindi and Marathi movies. Asha Bhosle is currently in Singapore to attend MIFTA awards (Marathi Culture awards).


Varsha was in her mid-50s and had allegedly attempted suicide once four years ago. She was admitted to Mumbai's Jaslok hospital after a drug overdose in 2008. She stayed by herself in the same locality as her mother.

She has worked as a columnist for The Sunday Observer between 1994 and 1998 and at Rediff between 1997 and 2003. Here is a link to her articles on Rediff.

According to TV reports, she reportedly shot herself at the singer's residence 'Prabhu Kunj' in Peddar Road. Varsha was divorced from freelance sports writer Hemant Kenkre.

The incident occurred around 12:30 pm. Police have arrived on the spot and are investigating. No suicide note has been found from the spot yet. According to police, Varsha pumped two rounds into herself.

The entire area has been cordoned off and people are being restricted from going near the place. A flat in the building is also occupied by Asha's elder sister and singing legend Lata Mangeshkar.

Bengaluru, May 6: Central Crime Branch Police have nabbed 71 people involved in various crimes taking advantage of Lock-down which prevents movement of people in the street and seized stolen properties worth about Rs 1.70 crore, official said on Wednesday.

Police said that in all 56 cases were booked. In all 17,312 duplicate Sanitisers, 2000 lts of Chemicals, 18,750 fake Masks, 270 Thermometers and two cars were seized from the arrested culprits.

During the raid godowns where rice and dal meant for free distribution during lock-down were robbed and stored were also seized.

Thane, Apr 24: A 34-year-old man was allegedly attacked on suspicion of being a COVID-19 patient and died after falling into a gutter during the assault in Kalyan town of Maharashtra's Thane district, police said on Friday.

The incident took place on Wednesday morning, when Ganesh Gupta had stepped out of his home to purchase some essentials amid the COVID-19 lockdown, an official said.

On noticing some policemen manning the street, the victim took an alternate route, where a few passersby assaulted him after he coughed while walking, he said.

The men suspected him of being a COVID-19 patient and attacked him, causing him to fall into a gutter and die, the official said.

The deceased's body was sent for post-mortem and a case of accidental death has been registered as of now, the station house officer of the Khadakpada police station said.
