Woman raped in mini bus, 2 arrested

Jammu, December 24: Close on the heels of gang-rape of a paramedical student in a moving bus in Delhi, a 38-year-old woman was allegedly raped by two youths in a similar modus operandi here.

The accused were arrested today, police said.According to the complaint, the victim was abducted by driver of a mini bus, Gian Singh, and his friend Shammi last night, police said.

Both raped the middle-aged woman near Gharota area on the intervening night of December 22 and 23, they said.

A case has been registered on the complaint of the victim and her family, police said, adding that a medical examination of the victim has been conducted.

The duo has been arrested and an investigation into the case is on, police said.

Mandya, Jun 14: In a tragic incident, a woman and her two children were drowned in a pond at Beeranahalli village in Nagamangala taluk of this district on Sunday.

Police said that the deceased have been identified as Geeta (40), and her two children Savita(19) and Soumya(14).

Savaitha is a degree student while Soumya was studying in 9th standard. The trio drowned in a pond where they had gone to wash their cows. The locals rushed to the spot and tried to rescue them but could not save.

New Delhi, Jan 2: A 20-year-old man set his motorcycle on fire after he was challaned by the traffic police in south Delhi's Greater Kailash area on Wednesday, police said.

Vikas, a resident of Sangam Vihar, was challaned by the traffic police for riding the motorcycle without helmet, a senior police official said.

The traffic police challaned him and impounded the motorcycle, following which Vikas set the bike on fire, the officer said.

A case has been registered and the accused arrested, the officer added.

Amaravati, Jul 31: Nine people have died after allegedly consuming sanitiser in Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh today, the police said.

Prakasam district Superintendent of Police Siddharth Kaushal said the people had been consuming sanitiser for the past few days, mixing it with water and soft drinks.

"We are also investigating whether they laced the sanitiser with any other toxic substances," the official said.

"Their family members say these people have been consuming sanitiser for the past ten days. We are sending the sanitiser stocks, being sold in the area, for examination," he added.

Kurichedu in Prakasam district has been under lockdown due to rise in coronavirus cases and hence, liquor shops have also been shut since the past few days.

Habitual drinkers were said to be consuming sanitisers that have alcohol content, apart from illicitly distilled arrack.

The police said two beggars near a temple were the first to fall victim on Thursday night. While one of them was found dead at the spot, another died in the government hospital in Darsi town, they said.

A third person was also taken to the Darsi hospital late on Thursday night after he fell unconscious but he was declared brought dead. Six others who fell ill after allegedly consuming sanitiser, died this morning.

Others who fell ill after consuming sanitiser are undergoing treatment at their residences in the village, the police added.
