Lucknow, Mar 16: The city of Agra erupted in anger with people taking to the streets over the brutal killing of a woman research scholar inside the Zoology laboratory of Dayalbagh Education Institute, a deemed university.

Police suspect the victim had been raped before being killed. The body of the research scholar from Delhi, that bore scores of stab wounds inflicted by a surgical knife was recovered on Friday evening.

According to sources, the victim’s supervisor went out on some work while she was still in the lab. Her mother said when she called her daughter on her mobile, it was answered by a man, who told her the researcher was in a market and would reach home later.

The victim’s mother called up the supervisor. The supervisor, who reached the varsity to look for the woman, found her lying in a pool of blood in the laboratory. The car of the deceased was recovered from a secluded spot near the banks of the Yamuna, the police said.

“The woman’s body bears several stab wounds inflicted by a surgical knife or blade...she was killed in a brutal manner,” Senior Superintendent of Police Agra S C Dubey said.

He did not rule out the possibility of rape. “The woman may have been raped before being killed...the killer could be a jilted lover or a psycho,” the officer added. A sketch of the victim found lying near her body made the cops believe that the killer could be a psycho.

Thousands of students and ordinary people took to the streets in protest against the killing.

Students boycotted their classes and also demonstrated before the New Agra police station. The police had to use force to disperse the crowd, which threatened to turn violent.
