Kirtan singer 'raped', one held

Kirtan_singer_rapedKolkata, Apr 15: A kirtan singer and writer was allegedly raped by her percussionist on Saturday. The accused, who had taken her to Gurudasnagar on the pretext of performing kirtan and raped her, was arrested from his house on Sunday. The victim has recently written a novel against rape.

The singer, a 36-year-old resident of Hedua in North Kolkata, said her percussionist Bibhas Haldar asked her to go to Gurudasnagar to perform kirtan. "I caught a train and reached Diamond Harbour. He came there to receive me," said the victim. The victim was offered cold drinks. "After having it, I started feeling uneasy. I asked him to take me to the station so that I can go back home." The accused is also from Gurudasnagar.

On the pretext of taking her to station, the accused took the singer to a desolate place on his bike and raped her. The victim was not in a position to resist.

Haldar even allegedly threatened her to kill, if she dared to approach police. "I pleaded him to take me to railway station so that I can go back home. He finally left me at the station. I somehow managed to board a train," she said.

The victim then called her family and said that she fell ill and someone must come to Sealdah station to receive her. "I fell unconscious in the train."

After receiving the victim in a semi-conscious state, her husband took her to the Medical College. There she narrated her plight to her husband and the doctors. Her medical examination was conducted. Later, After garnering courage, with the advise of the doctor, lodged

she lodged a complaint with Bowbazar police station. Police recorded the complaint and charged the accused with 376 (rape), 506 (criminal intimidation). Soon after her complaint, police swung into action and raided his house at Gurudaspur and arrested Haldar.

Gonda, Apr 9: A man allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling of his room as he was missing his wife stuck at her parents' place due to the lockdown, police said.

The incident took place in Radha Kund locality here on Wednesday, they said, adding the deceased has been identified as Rakesh Soni, 32.

As per information, Soni's wife had gone to her parents' place and was stuck there due to the lockdown and he was missing her due to which he committed suicide, Inspector Alok Rao said.

A probe is on in the mater, he said.

Thrissur, Jun 11: Volunteers of People for Animal Welfare Services rescued a dog that had its mouth sealed with insulation tape around it for two weeks in Ollur of Thrissur district.

The dog has now been shifted to an animal shelter home.

Recently two elephants died in Kerala. One pregnant elephant died after consuming crackers wrapped in some fruits in Palakkad.

Another elephant died in Malappuram after it was found seriously injured in North Nilambur forest range of the district.

Mumbai, May 10: A 32-year old man, running a bakery here has been arrested for alleged promotion of products using a tagline that said his firm does not employ Muslims, police said on Sunday.

The man, who is also selling his products online had allegedly said "made by Jains on orders, no Muslim staff" for promotion purposes in his WhatApp group.

A complaint was lodged against him saying the words depicted Muslims in a bad light and Mambalam police registered a case and arrested him, a release said adding a probe was on.

Recently, a man was arrested in Mumbai after he allegedly refused to collect groceries he had ordered online since the delivery person was a Muslim.
