Nagpur, May 5: It was a double blow for 14-year-old Sunita (name changed). First, she was violently raped by her stepfather that left her bleeding, in great pain, immobile and in deep trauma. Then, the doctors at the Government Medical College and Hospital, showing shocking apathy and insensitivity to Sunita, refused to admit her saying, "Such health conditions are expected in cases of rapes on young girls".

The alleged rape happened on Thursday night. She was brought to the hospital first on Friday evening. Sent back, Sunita had to be brought again on Saturday to the GMCH after she lost consciousness twice during the night. After being admitted at 2pm, Sunita continues to writhe in pain at the time of writing the report.

Sunita's stepfather Pradeep Kharwade has been arrested and is in police custody till May 7. It is learnt that that he had earlier attempted to rape his own daughter for which his family had thrown him out.

'Accused had made two attempts too'

Pradeep Kharwade was arrested for allegedly raping his step daughter Sunita (name changed). Around a year ago Kharwade, an ice-cream seller, started staying as 'husband' with the widowed mother of Sunita, a standard IX student at Antuji Nagar in Bhandewadi. The woman was working for a caterer. Relatives said that Kharwade had twice earlier attempted to molest Sunita for which he was warned by them. They also claimed that Kharwade may have been assisted by others on Thursday night, too.

Sunita and her 10-year-old sister were sleeping in their house on Thursday night when Kharwade, who is in his 50s, forced himself upon her. Her mother was out on duty at a wedding. Kharwade left the house even thought Sunita was bleeding from her private parts. She remained in pain and complained of dizziness for most part of Friday. On seeing her condition, a neighbour informed her mother who rushed home.

The woman then took Sunita to Nandanvan police station from where they were sent to GMCH. The girl's second round of humiliation started as soon as she stepped into the hospital. Despite repeated pleas by relatives to provide assistance, doctors at the GMCH chose to ignore Sunita who was all the while bleeding and writhing in pain. This shocking negligence - later denied by the hospital authorities - comes at a time when the government is trying hard to end atrocities on women by tightening the loopholes in the law.

"We were shocked to hear the statement," said the girl's mother. GMCH dean Dr Rajaram Pawar said that the doctors may have spoken the words only to "provide comfort and assurance". While GMCH authorities said the girl's family did not want to get her admitted, the relatives countered saying the doctors refused them permission.

During Friday night, Sunita lost consciousness twice. She was rushed back to the GMCH where doctors finally admitted Sunita after completing the paperwork. A relative said Sunita spent the whole night complaining of pain the abdomen and bleeding, which kept her awake.

The relative added that Sunita loses consciousness and is in a state of shock when she wakes up. "The doctors administered an injection in the afternoon and after that did not turn up at all. She is in terrible pain but nobody paying any attention to her. When I spoke to a doctor, I was told that there are other patients who require attention too," she said.

But, Dr Pawar said doctors were doing their best. "Considering her age, medicines are being provided at regular intervals," he said.

Pratapgarh, Jun 2: In a shocking incident, a young man was tied to a tree and set afire by the family of a woman with whom he was allegedly having an affair in Pratapgarh district of Uttar Pradesh late on Monday night.

The man, 25, was a resident of Bhujauni village under Fatanpur police station, and he died on the spot.

Enraged over the incident, his family members and local people turned violent and set two police vehicles on fire.

Additional forces were rushed in to control the situation that remains tense.

The body has been sent for post-mortem.

According to Superintendent of Police (SP), Pratapgarh, Abhishek Singh, "Some people barged into the house of Ambika Patel and dragged him away. They then tied Patel to a tree some distance away and set him on fire after sprinkling petrol on him. They fled immediately after." Agitated family members and villagers assembled at the site and set a 112 police response vehicle (PRV) and another police jeep on fire. They were demanding immediate arrest and action against the accused.

The official said that Patel's relatives claimed that he was having an affair with a woman from his village and this had resulted in many face-offs between the families.

Patel had reportedly shared a video clip of the woman on social media a few months ago further increasing tension between the families.

The woman's family members had registered a police complaint against Patel in this connection at the Fatanpur police station that led to his arrest. He was released from jail recently, police added.

The woman had been recently selected as a police constable and was posted to Kanpur.

The SP said that an FIR had been registered on the complaint of the victim's family and efforts were on to arrest the accused.

New Delhi, Jan 18: Two men accused of kidnapping and brutally raping a five-year-old girl in Delhi in 2013 have been held guilty by a court in the national capital today. The POCSO court, which will announce the quantum of punishment on January 30, said, "In our society the minor girls are worshipped as goddess on certain occasions but in the present case the victim child had experienced exceptional depravity and extreme brutality."

"The crime against the victim was committed in a most grotesque and revolting manner and the collective conscience of the community was shaken," the court added while holding the accused - Manoj Shah and Pradeep Kumar - guilty.

The assault which took place just four months after Nirbhaya's brutal rape had grabbed headlines with its shocking details. The girl, who was named Gudiya by sections of the media, went missing and the police told her parents to look for her themselves. She was found two days later, tied in the basement of the east Delhi house she lived in with traces of candles and bottles inside her private parts.

The convicts had fled after raping Gudiya and shoving a candle and bottle inside her private parts, leaving her at Manoj Shah's room, after believing the five-year-old to be dead. The child was rescued 40 hours later on April 17, 2013.

Manoj Shah and Pradeep Kumar were arrested by Delhi police separately from Muzaffarpur and Darbhanga in Bihar respectively in 2013. The charge sheet was filed on May 24 that year and charges were framed by the court on July 11. But, it took more than five years to complete the recording of the statement of 57 prosecution witnesses in the POCSO court.

"Though the trial should have been completed in two years, we are happy we got justice," said the father of the girl.

One of the convicts, Manoj Shah, allegedly assaulted some reporters while being taken out of the courtroom.
