Missing fashion student found dead in Punjab

May 6, 2013

New Delhi, May 6: The 23-year-old fashion designing student who had gone missing from her rented flat in east Delhi on April 20 was found dead two days later near railway tracks in PunjabPrachi_Dhamija.

This has been revealed by one Rajesh Kumar from Abohar who had read about the girl in local papers of Punjab at that time. Kumar, who was in the city for work, was surprised to read about the same girl in city papers and decided to approach Delhi Police. A team, comprising sub-inspector Yogesh and the girl's family members, rushed to Punjab to identify the body. It was found that the girl, Prachi Dhamija, had been cremated by the railway police after they failed to identify her.

Prachi's family confirmed the identity by the belongings recovered from the body, especially a fashion designing book with her name on it. "We believe that Prachi was kidnapped and then murdered. It was not an accidental death or suicide. Prachi would not go to a far-off place on her own," said her uncle, Praveen Dhamija. Prachi's parents have left for Haridwar to consign her belongings to the Ganga.

Prachi alias Sakshi was a student of International Institute of Fashion Design (INIFD) in Hauz Khas area of south Delhi. Police are clueless how Dhamija, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, reached Punjab. The incident raises questions on poor coordination of Punjab police as they did not inform the Delhi Police when a body was found.

According to police, she was last spotted at the Chandni Chowk Metro station. Her autopsy report is awaited, following which a case would be registered, an officer said. Her call details are also being scanned.

On April 20, Prachi had left the hostel to go a nearby shop but she never returned. Around 2pm, her younger sister called her several times but they went unattended. Fearing something may have gone wrong, her sister and cousins reached her hostel and found the door locked from outside. They opened the door using extra keys and found her cellphone in the room. Her parents were also informed.
