Nagpur, Oct 6: "He (Sudhakar Karadmare) had been harassing me and I just could not tolerate it any more. I used to feel threatened as he kept information about me," said Pranali Bhoyar, 18, while being taken for medical examination at Government Medical College and Hospital after her arrest on Friday for murdering Karadmare, a 58-year-old retired engineer from irrigation department in Gadchiroli.

Pranali, who looks a girl-next-door, allegedly stabbed the sturdily built man 19 times at his rented house at Ratan Nagar near Ramna Maroti on October 2.

Pranali, a second year DEd student who resides at a rented place at Ashok Square, repeatedly made the same statement before the judicial magistrate first class Shivnath Kale on Saturday who remanded her to police custody till October 8. According to source in police, Karadmare, who got married for fourth time at the age of 51, demanded sexual favours from the girl who regarded him as a father-like figure.

Pranali, who hails from Umred, was suffering from pox when taken into custody. She also had injuries on fingers of both hands. Pranali claimed before cops that she got hurt during the assault.

Pranali told her interrogators that she was forced to kill Karadmare because he was getting aggressive day-by-day with his demands and also twice attempted to force himself upon her. It is learnt, Pranali and Karadmare first met in a state transport bus while travelling Chandrapur to Gadchiroli around a year ago. Police feel that in the beginning Pranali might have had a cordial relation with Karadmare who helped her in various ways, including sponsoring education. "While Pranali respected Karadmare, he lusted for the girl," said cops.

Police said Karadmare, who had no children, was a queer character and his only addictions were smoking 'bidi' and gambling. "He kept to himself and hardly interacted with his neighbours. Karadmare had recently booked a car and also purchased some gadgets," said sources.

"Of late, Pranali had started objecting to Karadmare's advances and also avoided him for almost a month. Around a month before the murder, Karadmare followed Pranali from college and intercepted her at Sitabuldi. He also threatened to expose Pranali before her family," said sources.

Pranali told cops that she planned to attack Karadmare if he tried to sexually abuse her. She borrowed a knife from her landlady and got it sharpened from Budhwari before visiting Karadmare's place. After some conversation, Karadmare tried to sexually assault Pranali but she resisted by stabbing him with the knife. Pranali claimed that Karadmare tried to snatch the knife and overpower her. Pranali got injured in the scuffle and tried to hide in the bathroom but collapsed. She soon regained control and stabbed Karadmare on his neck. He chased her to bedroom but fell down. Pranali later wiped the knife with a napkin and washed her hands before walking out from there.

Though Pranali has been arrested, Nandanvan cops feel that she may have got assistance in the crime. Presence of three cups and a bigger footprint on the blood splattered floor are some of the signs that have made cops believe there could be another, along with Pranali, in the murder. It is learnt, Pranali has a boyfriend whom cops are trying to trace.

Police also believe that given her physique, it might not have been possible for Pranali to stab a man thrice her age. The deep wounds indicate heavy assault by someone with more strength. Blood splattered across two rooms with signs of grappling across the place also underlines that Pranali may not have been able to overpower Karadmare without support. It is learnt, forensic experts from GMCH have indicated use of more than one type of weapons for stabbing.

CDR helped cops trace Pranali

*Last few incoming and outgoing calls in the cellphone of Sudhakar Karadmare indicated that there was some 'Sonu' in his life

*Police team led by senior inspector Pravin Wandile of Nandanvan police station under supervision of DCP Chandra Kishor Mina, got the call detail records to trace Sonu, who was identified as Pranali Bhoyar alias Sonali

*Police first quizzed a friend of Pranali, who gave cops hint about her whereabouts. Pranali spent the night after the murder at her rented room at Ashok Square in Siraspeth before shifting to a relative's place at Hudkeshwar

*Pranali spilled the beans before her relatives after getting calls from friends quizzed by cops. The family contacted a constable with Nandanvan police station and handed her over to him
