On Debate Eve, Lokpal Bill Gets Trust Vote From Major Parties

December 17, 2013
KamalNathNew Delhi, Dec 17: With almost all political parties on Monday reiterating their desire to pass the Lokpal Bill at the earliest, the Samajwadi Party, which is opposing the legislation, is likely stage a walkout during the debate in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.
Emerging from an all-party meeting, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath said all parties which attended the meeting were unanimous that the Lokpal Bill should be passed on Tuesday.
“We discussed expeditious passing of the Lokpal Bill. All parties, except the Samajwadi party which was not present in the meeting, have expressed a desire that the Bill should be passed under all circumstances on Tuesday,” said Kamal Nath.
The all-party meeting was convened by Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari to have a consensus on the Lokpal Bill. The SP, BSP and DMK did not attend the meeting. Though the BSP was not present in the meeting, party chief Mayawati had already announced support to the Lokpal Bill. Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), which was earlier opposed to the legislation, also said on Monday that it has changed its stand. “We’ve changed our stand. We’re now supporting the Lokpal Bill,” said party RS MP Ram Kripal Yadav.
As activist Anna Hazare’s indefinite fast entered the seventh day, the UPA government wanted to ensure that the Lokpal Bill is passed on Tuesday. Kamal Nath said, if necessary, the session would be extended to pass the Lokpal Bill.
Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley has given notice for suspension of Question Hour to hold a discussion and pass the crucial legislation. Nath said the government is trying to persuade the Samajwadis not to disrupt the House.
Lalu attacks Anna on Anti-graft Bill

Targeting activist Anna Hazare for going on fast for the Lokpal Bill, RJD leader Lalu Prasad said, “Anna wants to weaken the judiciary of our country by bringing Lokpal.” However, in Delhi the news was that the RJD would support the Bill.

Bhopal, Mar 13: The Madhya Pradesh Economic Offences Wing (EOW) on Thursday decided to verify facts afresh in a complaint against former Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and his family, in which they are accused of falsifying a property document while selling land.

The development came after Mr Scindia quit the Congress and joined the BJP on Wednesday. 22 MLAs who belong to his camp also resigned, threatening the survival of the Kamal Nath government in the state.

"Yes, an order has been given for re-verification of facts in the complaint filed by Surendra Shrivastava," an Economic Offences Wing official told PTI.

An EOW release said Mr Shrivastava on Thursday filed a new complaint against Mr Scindia and his family, alleging that by falsifying a registry document, they sold him a piece of land at Mahalgaon which was smaller by 6,000 sq feet than the original agreement in 2009.

He had lodged the complaint first on March 26, 2014. But it was investigated and closed in 2018, the EOW official said. "As he again petitioned us today, we will re-verify the facts," the officer said.

Jyotiraditya Scindia's close aide Pankaj Chaturvedi alleged that it was political vendetta.

"The case had been closed for want of evidence. Now for vengeance, it is being reopened. We have full faith in the Constitution and law. We will get justice and Kamal Nath government a befitting reply," Mr Chaturvedi said.
