Kasaragod, Jul 23: Prominent anti-nuclear activist S P Udayakumar has called for setting up the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) model hospital offered to the State in Kasaragod district.

He said that it could be an atonement by the State for the prolonged aerial spraying of the pesticide endosulfan in cashew estates which resulted in the tragedy for hundreds of families in the district.

He said it was a disaster of greater magnitude than of December 1984 Bhopal disaster. It would be necessary to launch mass protests, including hunger strike, to see that the proposed hospital is set up in Kasaragod, Mr. Udayakumar said. Mr. Udayakumar was inaugurating a convention hosted by the Endosulfan Peeditha Janakeeya Munnani (EPJM) on Saturday to mount pressure on the State to chose Kasaragod for setting up the hospital.

“It is sad to note that the distraught and cash-strapped families residing in remote hamlets, continue to rush their afflicted wards to far off hospitals in the hope of availing expert medical care,” he pointed out.

The largely attended function held at the Town Cooperative bank auditorium, was chaired by EPJM president Muneesa Ambalathara, an endosulfan victim afflicted with vision impairment right from birth. Besides social activist Ambikasudan Mangad, retired Kasaragod government college Principal V. Gopinath and EPJM Secretary Ambalathara Kunhikrishnan took part in the meet.

Bengaluru, May 18: Indian food delivery startup Swiggy said on Monday it would lay off 1,100 employees, or nearly 14% of its workforce, to cut costs, as a weeks-long nationwide lockdown to curb the coronavirus outbreak hits demand for online food ordering.

The company, backed by South African internet giant Naspers, also said it will scale down adjacent businesses and has already shut several of its cloud kitchens - facilities that only cater to takeaway orders - temporarily or permanently.

“The core food delivery business has been severely impacted and will stay impacted over the short term, but is expected to start growing again after that,” said Sriharsha Majety, co-founder and chief executive at Bengaluru-based Swiggy.

Swiggy, one of India’s best known startups, is among many that are laying off employees and reshaping their business in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has forced 1.3 billion Indians indoors and crippled business.

India is currently under a two-month lockdown, and though several curbs are being eased, public places such as restaurants remain closed, hurting restaurants themselves as well as companies such as Swiggy and main rival Zomato.

Mangaluru, Jan 5: Against the backdrop of Mangalore violence of December 19, Additional Director General of Police of Karnataka Amar Kumar Pandey visited the city and held a meeting with senior police officers.

According to senior police officials here on Sunday, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi District Muslim Central Committee had planned to hold a protest against CAA at Nehru Maidan while the SKSSF had called for anti-CAA protest at State Bank area.

Though both the protests had been called off, there was an apprehension of a repeat incident of December 19 violence and hence the ADGP visited the city at the behest of state government and monitored the situation here for the entire day on Saturday.

The ADGP was unhappy that despite initial inputs and the imposition of Section 144 in the city, the situation on that day escalated to a level where police had to resort to firing only in this city.
