Dharmasthala to contribute Rs 25 cr to CM's relief fund

Mangaluru, Aug 18: Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala will contribute Rs 25 crore to the Chief Minister's relief fund for the flood victims in Karnataka, Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari (hereditary administrator) Veerendra Heggade has said.

Announcing this at a press conference at Dharmasthala on Saturday, Heggade said Rs 50 lakh will be provided for Belthangady taluk, which was the worst-hit area in Dakshina Kannada district.

Heggade said he will hand over the cheque of Rs 25 crore to the Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa on Monday and the cheque for Rs 50 lakh will be handed over to Belthangady MLA Harish Poonja.

He said the Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project has already distributed 19,000 bedsheets, two tonnes of bleaching powder to clean houses and home appliances to 4,900 families. As per a survey by the government, 20,827 houses have been damaged and farmlands of over 28 thousand families have been destroyed in the floods.

Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala will stand by the victims during these times of distress. SDM Education Trust will also help students who have been affected by the floods by providing uniforms, textbooks, school bags and dresses, he said.

He said the organisation has deployed over two lakh trained people in flood relief camps to help the authorities in the event of any further disaster. Heggade also urged the BJP government at the Centre to provide aid to the state for flood relief and rehabilitation work.

Bengaluru, Jan 10: Working President of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, Eashwar Khandre on Friday said that his party has extended its support to the demand made by the former chief minister of Karnataka, HD Kumaraswamy, that a House Committee should be formed to probe into Mangaluru violence.

Emphasising the need for a judicial probe into the incident, Khandre said, "Congress has always said that the truth should prevail and that there should be a judicial inquiry and investigation by a sitting Supreme Court judge or a High Court judge into the incident."

"We support his (HD Kumaraswamy) statement that a House Committee should be set up to probe into the incident of Mangaluru violence. Two innocent people lost their lives during the anti-CAA protest, it is very unfortunate," he added.

Two people were killed in Mangaluru in the alleged police firing after protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act turned violent on December 19.

The Act grants Indian citizenship to refugees from Hindu, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist and Parsi communities fleeing religious persecution from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh who entered India on or before 31, 2014.

Kasaragod, Jun 2: Kumbala police on Tuesday arrested 20 persons on charges of misbehaving and obstructing a medical team who were on official duty for Covid-19.

Police sources said the incident occurred at Kumbala beach near here on Monday evening when a group of locals misbehaved and obstructed an eight-member medical team, comprising of doctors and health workers, from carrying out a survey to asertain whether there has been a community spread of Covid-19 in that locality.

The health team was on a mission to gather data of people who had interacted with expatriates after they had returned to hometown recently.

Udupi, July 17: An Indian expatriate from coastal Karnataka who was working in Kuwait passed away in a hospital in the oil-rich country reportedly due to covid-19.

Sheikh Mohammed Syed (54) was a native of Kharvi in Kundapura taluk of Udupi district. He is survived by his mother, wife and three daughters. 

An ex athletic champion from Bhandarkars' Arts & Science College, he was a well-known Volleyball and Kabaddi player in Kundapur.  He was associated with many sports associations in Udupi. 

An employee of KRH firm, he was hospitalized in Kuwait three weeks ago due to ill health. He was tested positive for covid-19.

He breathed his last yesterday without responding to any treatment. Final rites were held in Kuwait. 

Prior to migrating to Kuwait, he had worked in United Arab Emirates for several years. A sports enthusiast, he had trained many athletes in Udupi.
