Dina Wadia, Jinnah’s daughter, dies at 98

Mumbai, Nov 3: Dina Wadia, the daughter of Pakistan’s founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah and mother of industrialist Nusli Wadia, died at her New York home on Thursday. She was 98. A statement issued by the Wadia family said that she died peacefully. It read, “She is survived by her daughter Diana, son Nusli, her grandsons, Ness and Jeh, Jeh’s wife Celina and two great grandchildren, Jah and Ella Wadia.”

Wadia wished to spend her last years in the Jinnah House in Mumbai that belonged to her father. In 2010, Wadia approached the High Court demanding that the house be handed over to her as she was the sole heir. Sheela Reddy, the author of Mr. and Mrs. Jinnah, said: “Her father indulged her. But they were estranged after she decided to marry Neville Wadia.” Ms. Reddy said Wadia had a neglected childhood despite being born to a rich father and a celebrity mother. “She was brought up by servants,” said Ms. Reddy.

She added that after estrangement with her father following her marriage with the Parsi industrialist, they got back on speaking terms, but did not become close again. “When Jinnah was unwell, Wadia tried to visit Pakistan, but he refused her a visa. She could eventually go only after his funeral.”

Pakistan's coronavirus tally reaches 6297, toll at 117

Islamabad, Apr 16: The number of coronavirus cases in Pakistan topped 6000 while the death toll due to the virus has reached 117, Dawn reported citing official data on Wednesday.

Over 1,446 people have recovered in the country from the deadly virus that has killed over 1.3 lakh people worldwide.

The total number of cases in the country has reached 6297 with Punjab being the worst affected province with 3,016 cases. Meanwhile, Sindh has 1,688 cases of the deadly virus.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has reported 47 new cases of the coronavirus, taking the provincial total to 912. Most of the new cases are of Tableeghi Jamaat members who have travel history.

Balochistan has reported four new cases of COVID-19, taking the provincial total to 281 according to provincial government spokesperson Liaquat Shahwani.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Imran Khan had announced the extension of the nationwide lockdown with relaxation to some sectors.

Addressing the media in Islamabad on Tuesday, Khan said, "We made the hard decision of imposing lockdown in the country which was very well implemented due to cooperation of the people."

The countrywide lockdown was imposed last month in a bid to stem the spread of coronavirus. Later, a two-week extension was announced in the restrictions until April 14.

Sri Lanka | Rajapaksa brothers strengthen grip as their group wins ‘super majority’ in parliament polls

Colombo, Aug 7: Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa's party and its allies won an overwhelming two-thirds majority in a parliament election, results showed on Friday, giving him the power to enact sweeping changes to the constitution.

The governing Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna and its allies had won 150 seats in the 225-member parliament, according to the tally published by the election commission from Wednesday's vote.

Rajapaksa had sought a two-thirds majority in parliament to be able to restore full executive powers to the presidency, which he says are necessary to implement his agenda to make the tiny island economically and militarily secure.

He is likely to install his older brother and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa as the next prime minister. The brothers are best known for crushing the Tamil Tiger rebels fighting for a separate homeland for minority Tamils during the elder Rajapaksa's presidency in 2009.

On a congratulatory phone call from Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India, which is keen to check Chinese influence on its southern neighbour, Mahinda Rajapaksa vowed to deepen ties between the two countries.

"With the strong support of the people of Sri Lanka, I look forward to working with you closely to further enhance the long-standing cooperation between our two countries," he told Modi. "Sri Lanka and India are friends and relations."

The tourism-dependent nation of 21 million people has been struggling economically since deadly Islamist militant attacks on hotels and churches last year followed by lockdowns to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

China Says Doesn't Wish To See More Clashes on Border with India

Beijing, Jun 17: China said Wednesday it wanted to avoid further clashes with India along their border after the first deadly confrontation between the two nuclear powers in decades.

The two countries have traded blame for Monday's high-altitude brawl that left at least 20 Indian soldiers dead, with China refusing to confirm so far whether there were any casualties on its side.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian insisted again Wednesday that it was Indian troops who illegally crossed the border and attacked the Chinese side.

This led to "a serious physical confrontation between both sides that caused deaths and injuries", Zhao said at a regular briefing, without providing more details about the casualties.

He said China urges India to "strictly restrain frontline troops, do not illegally cross the border, do not make provocative gestures, do not take any unilateral actions that will complicate the border situation".

But he added that the two sides "will continue to resolve this issue through dialogue and negotiations".

"We of course don't wish to see more clashes," Zhao said.
