Directors trust me because I am a curious actor: Sushant

September 30, 2016

New Delhi, Sep 30: From Dibakar Banerjee, Rajkumar Hirani to now Neeraj Pandey, Sushant Singh Rajput's filmography boasts of directors every actor yearns to work with and he feels his commitment for his job is what attracts these filmmakers towards him.

sushant-singh-rajputAfter a successful TV career, Sushant made his big screen debut with Abhishek Kapoor's "Kai Po Che!" and his performance in the film bagged him a YRF project in the form of "Shuddh Desi Romance".

His next two films were Hirani's "PK" and Banerjee's "Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!", which is now set for a sequel with Sushant gearing up to reprise his role.

When asked how did he manage to earn the trust of such acclaimed filmmakers, Sushant told PTI, "All these filmmakers are great not because they know their job well, it's because they are curious to know how to go about it...

"Such people would want an actor who is curious, wants to learn and get involved in his job to a maddening level that he forgets everything else. And I am all that."

The 30-year-old actor is now awaiting the release of Pandey's "MS Dhoni: The Untold Story", a biopic on Indian cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

The trailer of the film, which released today, got a thumbs-up from the fans, with many praising the way Sushant seemed to have emulated Dhoni's mannerisms-- on and off the field.

Sushant, however, is not nervous but says he is only interested to know the audience's reaction.

"Whatever reaction I get, I will get used to it in a day. So, I am not worried about that. Of course, I will feel nice if what I felt while making the film resonates with the audience. But as an actor my job is done. There's no nervousness. I am just interested in knowing the reaction."

The movie is no doubt the biggest film of his short career so far and naturally it is being speculated how its success can elevate Sushant's position in the industry. The actor does not look at it this way and prefers to treat the movie like any other project.

"We start with an assumption that all we want as actors is recognition. I don't work for recognition. The first fame happened, I felt good, I wouldn't lie. But with time I realised the bigger thing that I am in for and that's my love for the craft.

"I know I can't do anything else in my life but act. So, everything else does not matter. In fact, I am already thinking about my next."

Sushant insists even a film's commercial success does not matter to him beyond the point of proving himself as a bankable actor.

"There are different ways to look at hits and flops. I will continue to act even if I deliver flops. My love and commitment towards my work won't change with box-office successes and failures.

"But they are relevant when it is about getting film with great directors. Then, I have to show the box-office records in order to bag more work..."

Sushant's forthcoming projects include romantic drama "Raabta", a yet-untitled action film opposite Jacqueline Fernandez and a biopic on paralympic gold paralympic medalist Murlikant Petkar.

Mumbai, Jul 2: The Mumbai police have summoned noted filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali for questioning in connection with the Sushant Singh Rajput suicide case. According to several reports, casting director Shanoo Sharma too might be questioned in connection with the star’s death.

Reports also state that Kangana Ranaut and Shekhar Kapur, who are not directly involved with the investigation, are likely to be asked to record their statements.

The development comes days after the cops had asked for the details of SSR’s contract with Yashraj Films. The MS Dhoni actor had starred in Shuddh Desi Romance and Detective Byomkesh Bakshi, which were backed by the banner. He was supposed to team up with YRF for Paani, directed by Kapur, but the movie was on hold due to creative differences between the Mr India helmer and the production house.

Sushant died by suicide on June 14, leaving his near and dear ones in a state of shock. Following his demise, fans alleged that several Bollywood biggies had tried to sabotage his career as he was an ‘outsider’, reigniting the nepotism debate.

SSR, who hailed from Patna, made an impact in the TV industry before entering Bollywood with the sleeper hit Kai Po Che. He impressed fans with his performances in PK and Shuddh Desi Romance, consolidating his standing in the industry. It was, however, MS Dhoni that established him as a bankable star. Chhichore was his last theatrical release before his death. Drive, backed by Karan Johar, released directly on Netflix. His last film Dil Bechara is slated to release on Disney+ Hotstar on July 24.

Mumbai, Jan 7: Actor Anil Kapoor, who next will be seen onscreen in Malang, revealed that he always tells superstar Aamir Khan not to stop working with filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani.

Kapoor was interacting with the media at the trailer launch of Malang along with his co-actors Adtiya Roy Kapur, Disha Patani, Elli AvRam, film's director Mohit Suri and producers Luv Ranjan, Bhushan Kumar, Ankur Garg and Jay Shewakraman on Monday in Mumbai.

Anil Kapoor has worked with many directors and producers in his 40-year acting career.

Talking about camp culture in the Hindi film industry and praising makers of Malang, Kapoor said, "I feel we need producers like Ankur (Garg) and Luv (Ranjan). I have told Mohit (Suri) to continue doing films with them. I always tell Aamir Khan by calling him on the phone to say that you should not leave Raju Hirani (Rajkumar Hirani). Whenever I see films of both of them, I tell Aamir not to leave him."

He continued, "I feel whenever you make a good team then you should hold on to it. Team is very important and there are certain stars that come together to make something interesting and exciting."

Kapoor gave an example of Hollywood actors and filmmakers while backing his viewpoint.

"If you see Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio they do so many films together. They can work with others, too, but they keep working with each other. There is some magic, obviously. You have to go with the casting but somewhere I feel teams should stand by each other," the actor added.

Malang stars Aditya Roy Kapur, Disha Patani, Anil Kapoor and Kunal Khemu in lead roles. It is scheduled to release on February 7.
