Disqualification of MLAs: Bypolls to 15 seats in Karnataka on Oct 21

Bengaluru, Sept 21: The election commission today announced byelections to 15 out of 17 Karnataka assembly segments that fell vacant two months ago after 14 Congress and 3 JD(S) MLAs were disqualified by speaker K R Ramesh Kumar.

The elections will be held on October 21 and results will be announced on October 24. The election commission has however not announced elections for R R Nagar and Maski assembly segments and he reasons are yet to be known.

The decision of the election commission to hold bypolls has come as a shocker for disqualified MLAs as hearing on their petitions questioning the speaker's verdict will start only from September 23 (Monday). If they don't get any relief from the Supreme Court on Monday by way of either quashing the speaker's decision or staying it, then their hopes of contesting byelections will be dashed.

This is highly unlikely that the court would give its verdict on the case on Monday itself as the arguments are yet to start. Keeping this in mind, the disqualified MLAs are likely to request the court on Monday to give an interim verdict on their disqualification so that they can contest the bypolls.

These bypolls are also crucial for the ruling BJP to be in power as they have to win at least 7 seats to cross the half way mark in the 224 member assembly. Now the BJP has 106 MLAs including independent H Nagesh. The BJP could form the government as the strength of the house came down to 208 after the disqualification of 17 MLAs.

 Bengaluru, Jan 12: Two pilgrims from Bengaluru, who were siblings, drowned in sea off Auro Beach in Puducherry today.

The deceased have been identified as V Gauthman, 22, and his brother Vivek, 20.

Gauthman and Vivek were among a group of around 150 devotees from Bengaluru to the Adhiparasakhi temple at Melmaruvathur in Kancheepuram district of Tamil Nadu. They started their journey from Bengaluru in three buses on Friday.

After offering special puja at Adhiparasakthi temple and worshipping at a few other temples, they reached Auro Beach on Sunday afternoon. 

While they were having lunch on the beach, Gauthman entered the sea. He was caught in a huge wave.

Vivek, who tried to rescue his brother, too was caught in the wave.

Other pilgrims and fishermen began to search for them in fishing boats.

After an hour, their bodies were washed ashore, around two km from the spot.

The Auroville police retrieved the bodies and sent them for postmortem.

Belthangady, Jul 26: The forest department officials on Sunday banned traffic in Charmadi ghat section as a precautionary measure following information that landslide and uprooting of trees may take place due to heavy rain which has been lashing the ghat section since last one week.

The officials said that a tree was likely to be uprooted in the 6th and 7th cross of the ghat section therefore the entry of vehicles were banned and this has resulted in a traffic jam.

It is said that despite lockdown many vehicles have been playing in the Ghat section.

Bengaluru, Jul 26: A total of 5,199 new COVID-19 cases and 82 deaths were reported from Karnataka on Sunday, the state's health department said.

With this, the total number of coronavirus cases in the state stands at 96,141, including 58,417 active cases and 35,838 recoveries.
So far, 1,878 deaths have been reported from Karnataka.

Meanwhile, India reported a spike of 48,661 cases and 705 deaths in the last 24 hours, said the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Sunday.

A total of 9,46,777 tests have been done so far and the number of tests per million in the national capital stands at 49,830.

The total COVID-19 positive cases stand at 13,85,522, including 4,67,882 active cases, 8,85,577 cured/discharged/migrated, and 32,063 deaths, it added.
