Chennai, May 23: The Madras High Court has directed all theatre owners in the State not to collect entertainment tax from viewers of the much awaited Tamil feature film Kochadaiiyaan, starring Superstar Rajinikanth and Bollywood actor Deepika Padukone.

Tax for Kochadaiiyaan

A vacation bench of Justices M M Sundresh and R Mahadevan gave the direction while passing interim orders on a public interest writ petition from advocate S Muthiah of Ernavur, on Thursday.

According to the petitioner, the TN government issued an order dated July 21, 2011, granting exemption from entertainment tax for films bearing Tamil names, old films, holders of copyright of Tamil films and old and new Tamil films which are in consonance with Tamil language and culture. Challenging this, the petitioner filed a writ petition and the High Court on April 10, 2013 granted an interim stay of the 2011 GO. Citing the stay order, the government refused exemption from entertainment tax for Tenaliraman and Yennamo Yedho. Challenging this, the producers moved the Madras High Court and the matter was pending. The TN government passed a GO on May 12 this year granting ET exemption to Kochadaiiyaan. It also issued a circular stating that the exemption granted is applicable only from the date of grant of exemption and not before that.

The petitioner contended that when the operation of the main 2011 GO had been stayed, the government could not grant exemption to Kochadaiiyaan. The authorities have no regard or respect for the order of the High Court and are liable to be punished under the Contempt of Court Act, the petitioner said and sought to quash the May 12 GO.

Passing an interim order on Thursday, the judge said that admittedly the exemption granted stands valid as of today. Therefore, the exhibitors cannot demand and collect ET from the public. “In such view of the matter, we pass an interim order directing the Commercial Tax and Registration department and the theatre owners not to collect any tax for which the exemption has been granted by the May 12 GO,” the bench said.

The bench also permitted the petitioner to file an application to implead all the exhibitors in the manner known to law. It made it clear that the price as fixed by the government alone should be charged and collected.

Washington, Jun 20: American actor Angelina Jolie has now opened up about her 2016 divorce announcement with Brad Pitt, which shocked fans.

Fox News said the 45-year-old Jolie opened up about leaving the father of her six kids,18-year-old Maddox, 16-year-old Pax, 15-year-old Zahara, 12-year-old, Shiloh, and 11-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne.

"I separated for the well-being of my family. It was the right decision. I continue to focus on their healing," the Oscar-winning star told Vogue India magazine.

The 'Maleficent' star added, "Some have taken advantage of my silence, and the children see lies about themselves in the media, but I remind them that they know their own truth and their own minds. In fact, they are six very brave, very strong young people."

Since 2004, Pitt and Jolie were together but only married in August 2014 at their estate in France.

The 'Mr and Mrs Smith' star previously told Harper's Bazaar magazine how the last few years have been physically, emotionally and mentally turbulent for her.

"My body has been through a lot over the past decade, particularly the past four years, and I have both the visible and invisible scars to show for it," Jolie said.

"The invisible ones are harder to wrestle with. Life takes many turns. Sometimes you get hurt, you see those you love in pain, and you can't be as free and open as your spirit desires. It's not new or old, but I do feel the blood returning to my body," she added.

Besides her marriage ending on the public stage, Jolie underwent a preventative double mastectomy in 2013 followed by breast reconstruction after testing positive for the BRCA gene. In 2015, the actor 'Girl, Interrupted' star also had her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed.

She admitted it has taken a while for her to feel like her old self. She said, "The part of us that is free, wild, open, curious can get shut down by life. By pain or by harm."

Mumbai, Jun 4: Casting director Krish Kapur, who had worked on films like Mahesh Bhatt's Jalebi and Kriti Kharbanda-starrer Veere Ki Wedding, passed away at the age of 28 due to brain hemorrhage, his family said.

There was speculation that Kapur died in a road accident but his maternal uncle, Sunil Bhalla, dismissed the reports, saying that the casting director fainted at his home in suburban Mira Road here and suffered brain hemorrhage.

According to Bhalla, Kapur breathed his last on May 31.

"He had no medical history. He was healthy and doing absolutely fine. On May 31, he just collapsed and started to bleed. He died of brain hemorrhage," Bhalla said on Wednesday.
