Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 18: The dawn-to-dusk hartal in Kerala, called by Youth Congress (YC), in protest against the double murder of its activists in Kasaragod district on Sunday night began on Monday.
Youth Congress State President Deen Kuriakose said the hartal will be observed peacefully and urged its activists not to indulge in violence.
Hospitals, banks, marriage functions, tourist centres, vehicles carrying foreign tourists, milk supply and newspapers would be exempted from the hartal between 6am and 6pm.
Meanwhile, Kerala Students Union (KSU) has called for an educational bandh in protest against the double murder.
Police said two Youth Congress activists Kripresh (21) and Sarath (27) were hacked to death at 2100 hours last night at Kalliyot in Pullor-Periya village near Kanhangad in Kasaragod district.
A group of men alleged to be CPI(M) activists is said to have blocked the two youth Congress workers riding on a two wheeler at Kalliyot and brutally hacked to death.
Earlier, Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) has called a hartal in Kasaragod today in protest against the killing.
