In a shocking incident, a first year engineering student of a private college at Othakalamandapam in Coimbatore was stabbed to death in a clash between two groups of students in the hostel premises on Wednesday, November 21.

The deceased has been identified as Ashraf Mohammad (18) from Anna Nagar near Kulithalai in Tiruchi, a first year civil engineering student at Hindustan Institute of Technology at Othakalamandapam.

Based on a complainant lodged by S. Koushik, a first year student and friend of Mohammed, police arrested three first year students -- A. Dinakaran (19) from Palaya Vilangudi in Madurai, Nithish Kumar (19) from Thalakuntha in the Nilgiris and R. Saravanakumar (19) from Thirupuvanam in Sivaganga.

The incident happened near the college hostel mess for first year students around 10 a.m. The police said that a series of incidents led to the murder, which started with Koushik's friend Rija Thowfic asking for Dinakaran’s photo from a student named Vetri.

Dinakaran came to know about it from Vetri and picked up a quarrel with Koushik, Thowfic, and his friends, including Ashraf Mohammed.

During the clash, Dinakaran allegedly stabbed Mohammad in the chest. Mohammed was admitted to a private hospital, but died in the evening.
