The 'utterly butterly' Amul girl turns 50

Mumbai, June 12: In a country where cartoons are creating flutter among politicians, the iconic 'utterly butterly' girl survived half a century. The brand mascot of the Amul butter advertisements, for whom no subject is a taboo, has turned 50. The girl in her polka dotted dress, with a matching bow in her hair, has continued to charm with her tounge-in-cheek humour since 1960s.

To celebrate her 60th birthday, Amul and its creative partner DaCunha Communications have decided to launch a coffee table book on the iconic girl.

"The great thing about Eustace Fernandes' girl is the round face that can be adapted to be anybody. With Manmohan Singh, put a turban on her. It can be Indira Gandhi, give her a white streak. So it's a supremely adaptable creation," says Sylvester DaCunha, Founder-Chairman, DaCunha Communications.

In the initial years, the Amul campaigns projecting the girl were run mostly in print and radio. The first billboard campaign appeared in 1966 of the the girl kneeling in prayer, with one eye closed and another on the pack of butter with the words, "Give us this day our daily bread with Amul Butter." Her cuteness attracted the mind of the public instantly. Since then there was no looking back. For the last 50 years, she has been part of Amul's campaign on different current affairs issues.

But it's a difficult job to choose the best of her campaigns. Mr DaCunha says, "My favourite one - it used politics - Narasimha Rao, VP Singh and Mrs Gandhi, but it used a Hindi film reference. And India loves two things - politics and movies. So that was a good one."

Recent controversy surrounding cartoons on NCERT books or on newspapers has irked the liberal society, who alleges that putting a gag on such cartoons is against freedom of expression. However, political furore has not been able to dampen the spirit of the Amul girl. In the words of her creator, "There are controversies. But finally we live in a free country. And you can get away with stuff. I think if you go too much overboard, it's always tricky. So we try and keep it little bit under."

The coffee table book features articles by many who made it to the hoardings, including actor Amitabh Bachchan and cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle, who feels the book is a piece of history, rather than just a collector's item. Mr Bhogle says, "It's a library of sorts, isn't it? You see a hoarding, you remember it next week, and you remember the one after that. But when it comes together in a book, it becomes a history book, almost."

The book, a tribute to the Amul girl's wit, humour on the high and low points in India's recent tumultuous history will certainly evoke nostalgia. And, as Mr DaCunha says, will continue to charm everyone in coming years as well.

Mar 11: The shooting of Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai has been completed, and the film will now release on schedule.

If one recalls, the film went on the floors in the first week of November 2019 and was supposed to be Salman’s fastest completed film. However, the movie faced a variety of roadblocks — It was first to be wrapped in the first week of February, “But Salman went off to his Panvel farmhouse after the release of Dabangg 3 and spent a while there ushering in his birthday,” a source reveals.

“Then, the extension of the show Bigg Boss 13 by five weeks also turned out to be another speed breaker. Then, Salman wanted to make sure that the film was being made as good as what his audiences wanted on Eid. He made sure that his director Prabhudeva got what he wanted from the performers and didn’t want to rush him.

"Additionally, the Azerbaijan schedule of the film also got cancelled as Salman did not want to take any chances with the cast and crew with the lurking Covid 19, and rescheduled the shoot in India. This is now complete, barring any patchwork that might emerge later,” our source adds.

Radhe is slated to be an Eid release, which will clash with Akshay Kumar’s Laxmmi Bomb.

Mumbai, Aug 2: Oscar-winning director Alfonso Cuaron has come aboard as an executive producer on filmmaker Chaitanya Tamhane's movie The Disciple. The Marathi feature is set to represent India at the 77th edition of the Venice Film Festival. It will be screened in the Competition section of the prestigious film gala.

The movie, which is Tamhane's follow-up to his National Award-winning feature Court, has also been selected for 2020 Toronto International Film Festival's official line-up.

"I met Chaitanya through a mentorship program where I had the opportunity to watch his very superb debut film, Court  I was immediately impressed by his sense of cinema and fearless confidence to tell stories.

"He was part of most of Roma's process and I jumped to the opportunity to be part of the process of his second film The Disciple. I believe Chaitanya is one of the most important new voices of contemporary cinema," Cuaron said in a statement.

Tamhane said he is honoured to have Cuaron aboard the film.

"It’s a bit surreal and an incredible honour for me to have one of the most recognised and acclaimed filmmakers in the world be part of 'The Disciple'. In some ways, this validation from Alfonso Cuaron is even more," he added.

The Disciple, a 127-minute long feature, stars Aditya Modak, Arun Dravid, Sumitra Bhave, and Kiran Yadnyopavit. It has been produced by “Sir” actor Vivek Gomber through his Zoo Entertainment Pvt. Ltd.

The Disciple marks Tamhane’s return to Venice after he won the Best Film - Orizzonti and Lion of the Future award for Court in 2014.

Court, a poignant commentary on India's judicial system, also won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in 2015 and was India's official entry for the Best Foreign Film at the 2016 Oscars.

Endeavor Content will sell North American rights and New Europe Film Sales boards the film as an international sales agent.
