If Salman Khan ruled the roost in 2012, his rivals Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan too made a mark. But the year also saw actors like Irrfan, Manoj Bajpayee and Nawazuddin Siddiqui rising and shining on film firmament, thanks to their flawless performances.

From playing a rowdy cop to a deaf-mute boy or bringing alive a real-life gangster on screen - actors donned various avatars and entertained movie buffs throughout the year.

Here are top 10 actors of the year 2012:

Salman Khan: The actor continued to be on the top with two hits - Ek Tha Tiger and Dabangg 2. His portrayal of an Indian spy in Ek Tha Tiger and a corrupt yet benevolent cop Chulbul Pandey in Dabangg 2 was received well by the movie buffs and helped makers earn big bucks at the box-office.

Ranbir Kapoor: After Rockstar, this Kapoor scion continued to take the legacy forward with Barfi!. He made people laugh and cry with his heart-warming portrayal of a deaf and mute boy Murphy in the film directed by Anurag Basu. The role required him to showcase different emotions without speaking a word, and the actor excelled in it.

Aamir Khan: Though Aamir's suspense thriller Talaash opened to mixed response, his midas touch helped the film earn profits at the box-office, both, in India and in the overseas market. Critics felt script was not impressive, but Aamir's portrayal of a police personnel trying to solve a murder case while mourning his 11-year-old son's death impressed his fans.

Shah Rukh Khan: Critics felt that Shah Rukh has outgrown lover boy roles. In Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Yash Chopra's last directorial venture, more than his romantic avatar, people loved him as an army personnel. The film opened to mixed response despite the huge buzz around SRK's pairing with Katrina Kaif for the first time.

Akshay Kumar: Khiladi Kumar batted as many as five hits. He had six outings this year - Housefull 2, Rowdy Rathore, Joker, Oh My God and Khiladi 786. Except for Joker, all the Akshay-starrers raked not only earned profit, but some even entered the Rs.100 crore club. From doing hardcore action stunts to tickling the audiences' funny bones or donning the garb of 'god', Akshay happily brought forth different aspects of his
personality through different roles and viewers lapped it up.

Ajay Devgn: After Singham and Golmaal 3, Rohit Shetty gave Ajay a distinct style in Bol Bachchan - his witty one-liners and Hindi to English translations, took audience on a laughter ride. In Son of Sardaar, he donned the garb of a sardaar and walked away with accolades, again. Both his films went on to earn over Rs.100 crore at the box-office.

Irrfan: His gripping portrayal of an athlete-turned-gangster won many hearts in the biopic titled Paan Singh Tomar. The two-year wait proved fruitful as the film not only did well at the box-office but also brought critical acclaim for Irrfan from all over the world. It can be said that no one other than Irrfan could play the role with so much conviction that people could feel the emotions.

Manoj Bajpayee: The 2012 brought sunshine for Manoj, who was in the oblivion for some time. His power-packed performance as a small town gangster in Anurag Kashyap's successful Gangs of Wasseypur wowed both critics and audience alike. He even excelled as freedom fighter Surya Sen in Bedabrata Pain's much talked about Chittagong that focused on the Chittagong uprising.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui: He was there, but nobody noticed the talented actor with unconventional looks till Gangs of Wasseypur happened. His acting capabilities as gangster Faizal Khan in the film made him a star. Nawaz also proved his mettle as an actor with Kahaani and Talaash.

Sanjay Dutt: After playing positive roles and doing comedies, Sanjay revived Bollywood's larger than life villain with his role as Kancha Cheena in Agneepath remake. He sent shivers down the spine as the ruthless, cold-blooded Kancha Cheena and his dreadful make-up did the trick. Later in the year he took a U-turn and tickled the funny bones of the audiences in Son Of Sardaar.

Mumbai, Jul 27: Reel life villain Sonu Sood turned real life hero once again, this time by gifting a tractor on Sunday to a farmer in a remote village in Andhra Pradesh to help him till the land. The actor came up with the gift after coming through a video clip on Twitter wherein a tomato farmer in Madanapalle in Chittoor district was seen ploughing the land with his two daughters carrying the yoke on their shoulders.

In his instant reaction, Sood promised a pair of ox to the farmer, but later said the family deserved a tractor. "So sending you one. By evening a tractor will be ploughing your fields. Stay blessed," Sood, who acted as a villain in numerous Telugu films, said in a tweet.

True to his word, a new tractor was delivered to the elated farmer Nageswara Rao at his Mahalrajupalle village by Sunday night. Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu, who belongs to Chittoor district, hailed the actor's gesture.

"Spoke with @sonusood ji and applauded him for his inspiring effort to send a tractor to Nageswara Rao's family in Chittoor district. Moved by the plight of the family, I have decided to take care of the education of the two daughters and help them pursue their dreams," Naidu said in a tweet.

Rao's elder daughter completed her Intermediate while the second one passed Class 10. Rao used to run a tea stall in Madanapalle before coronavirus left him out of business. He returned to his native Mahalrajupalle village to take up agriculture once again.

Given his penury, he could not hire either a pair of bulls or a tractor to till the land, when his daughters volunteered to help him on the chores. Their plight went viral on social media following which the actor stepped in with help.

Jun 8: The Shiv Sena has sought to take a different stand on Bollywood actor Sonu Sood’s help in ferrying migrants back home in the midst of the nationwide lockdown induced by the coronavirus pandemic. On Sunday evening, the actor met Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray at his residence ‘Matoshree’. The CM’s son and Maharashtra minister Aaditya Thackeray and MLA Aslam Shaikh were also present during the meeting.

Sonu Sood’s visit to the Shiv Sena supremo’s residence came after Sanjay Raut, one of the most vocal leaders of the party, criticised the actor and sought to draw a BJP link to his help to migrants in order to show the ruling dispensation in poor light.

“Sood is an actor whose profession is to deliver dialogues scripted by someone else and make a living out of it. There are many people like Sood who would promote any political party if paid well,” Raut wrote in Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamna.

Referring to the actor’s help to migrants, Raut wondered if the sudden generosity of “Mahatma” Sood in Mumbai was at BJP’s behest and said that he would “soon meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and become the celebrity manager of Mumbai.”

As Raut’s remarks fuelled a controversy in political circles, Aaditya Thackeray tweeted in praise of Sood in an apparent attempt to distance the party and its leadership from the leader’s remarks.

“This evening Sonu Sood met up with Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray ji along with Minister Aslam Shaikh ji and me. Better Together, Stronger Together to assist as many people through as many people. Good to have met a good soul to work for the people together.”

“The CM was glad to meet Sonu Sood and discussed the work everyone is doing for the people during covid relief. Misunderstandings don’t exist but what does is a commitment to help people,” Aaditya tweeted.

Sonu Sood too sought to downplay Raut’s remarks and expressed gratitude to all political parties for having supported him. “They (Shiv Sena) are also supporting it and it’s not about any particular party. We have to support all the people who are suffering. Every party from Kashmir to Kanya Kumari has supported me,” the actor told reporters after his meeting with the Chief Minister.

Sonu Sood has earned immense praise for providing help to stranded migrant workers during the Covid-19 lockdown. He has launched a helpline for migrants and has helped hundreds of migrants return to their native places in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Karnataka.
