'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani' crosses Rs 1 billion mark

June 9, 2013

Yeh_Jawaani_HaiMumbai, Jun 9: Romantic comedy "Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani" has pulled in 1 billion rupees in domestic ticket sales in one week, underscoring actor Ranbir Kapoor's increasing clout at the Bollywood box office.

"He is not just a star, he is a superstar now," trade analyst Vajir Singh said on Friday.

"The rate at which ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani' has crossed 100 crore (1 billion) rupees in domestic theatre revenues is bigger than his last film ‘Barfi', which also did well at the box office," he said.

"Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani", directed by Ayan Mukerji and produced by Karan Johar, stars Kapoor and Deepika Padukone in the lead roles.

Kapoor, who made his Bollywood debut with "Saawariya" in 2007, has forged a successful career despite tackling unconventional roles in an industry dominated by action films and family dramas.

The versatile actor played a deaf-mute in "Barfi!" last year and stood out in the ensemble cast of Prakash Jha's "Raajneeti" for his supporting role as the hard-nosed, ambitious scion of a political party.

The 30-year-old actor is currently filming Anurag Kashyap's "Bombay Velvet", a thriller co-starring Anushka Sharma.

Indore, Jan 14: Yoga guru Ramdev has said that Deepika Padukone should hire persons like him for offering correct advice, days after the actress had visited Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi following the violence at the campus earlier this month.

"Deepika Padukone needs to study about political, social and cultural issues. She should understand more about our country. Only after gaining knowledge, she should take decisions. I feel she should have persons like Swami Ramdev for correct advice," Ramdev said at an event here on Monday.

On January 7, Padukone joined the protest at JNU after a masked mob entered the varsity campus and attacked the students and teachers with sticks and rods on January 5.

Several BJP leaders questioned the support extended by Padukone. On the other hand, the Congress threw their weight behind the actress for her stand.

Washington, May 18: Joining hands with the European Commission, actor Leonardo DiCaprio launched the Virunga Fund with seed money of USD 2 million to support Africa's Virunga National Park.

Since Virunga has lost a significant amount of revenue due to COVID shutdown post-March, the fund will be used to support the national park and the communities around, reported Variety.

The fund is aimed at disease prevention efforts, protection of mountain gorilla, and other species.

"I had the great honor of meeting and supporting Virunga's courageous team in their fight against illegal oil drilling in 2013," Variety quoted DiCaprio as saying.

"Virunga urgently needs funds to protect the endangered mountain gorilla population, to provide support to the rangers and the families of rangers who have fallen in the line of duty, and to help deliver essential disease prevention efforts. It's critical that we rally together during this time of incredible crisis," he added.

The 'Titanic' actor had earlier produced a Netflix documentary film 'Virunga' which is based on the national park.
