Jiah Khan and Sooraj Pancholi were in a live-in relationship: Police

June 12, 2013

Jiah_Khan_copyMumbai, Jun 12: Actress Jiah Khan's mother told police that her daughter was in a "live-in relationship" for a year with boyfriend Sooraj Pancholi who was remanded in police custody till June 13 by a local court a day after being arrested for allegedly abetting her suicide.

Sooraj, son of actor-couple Aditya Pancholi and Zarina Wahab, was arrested on June 10 on the charge of abetting the suicide of the 25-year-old actress who hanged herself at her Juhu residence last Monday.

Sooraj was sent in police custody by the court after the prosecution said his interrogation was necessary following allegations of threat, assault and rape levelled against him

by the actress in a note found three days after her suicide.

In a new twist to investigations, Jiah Khan's mother Rabiya told police that the Nishabd actress and Sooraj were in "live-in relationship" for nearly a year, a senior police officer said.

"Rabiya also said Jiah was completely shattered when Sooraj sent her a 'break-up' bouquet. This was one of the reasons behind the young actress' extreme step. Sooraj had promised to marry Jiah," the officer said.

However, there was no evidence to link Sooraj's actor-father Aditya to the case, the officer added.

Police are also verifying in which hospital the distraught actress had undergone abortion.

Though the note, purportedly written by Jiah Khan, mentioned the word 'rape', police are yet to take a decision on slapping the charge of sexual assault against the accused.

Meanwhile, Rabiya tweeted: "My daughter had bruises on her jaw. She was hit badly that pushed her to the end path. I wish I was there. How dare he (Sooraj) hit her!"

Sooraj has been booked under IPC Section 306 (abetment of suicide). His domestic help would again be called for recording of statement to corroborate the evidence gathered by the police in the case.

Seeking his custody, police told the court that they have recovered five love letters exchanged between Sooraj and Jiah

and they wanted to verify the contents.

The CCTV footage of the hotel and house, where the couple went hours before Jiah ended her life, has also been recovered, Public Prosecutor A K Pacharane told the court.

He said there were serious allegations against Sooraj.

A distressed Jiah had aborted their baby and this aspect, too, needed to be probed, the prosecution said in its remand application.

Accepting the prosecution's arguments, Magistrate Seema Jadhav remanded Sooraj in police custody till June 13.

The court rejected defence lawyer Zameer Khan's contention that the note, which formed the basis for seeking custody, did not specifically name Sooraj and was not signed by Jiah.

The note, according to the actress' family, was discovered three days after her death and not immediately, the defence counsel said.

Khan argued that his 21-year-old client could not have given any commitment (regarding relationship) to Jiah during a short courtship of just 6-8 months. "Jiah was obsessive and possessive...it does not mean Sooraj should be pinned."

He maintained that the US-born actress was a "troubled child" and was under depression for many years.

Jiah had made a dream debut in the film industry, featuring opposite megastar Amitabh Bachchan in Ram Gopal Varma's 2007 movie 'Nishabd' when she was just 19.

Jiah's mother had yesterday claimed her daughter took the extreme step due to "trauma and abuse" caused by Sooraj and his

father Aditya, rubbishing media reports that a fading career

in Bollywood forced her to end her life.

Mumbai, Aug 2: None of the sim cards that actor Sushant Singh Rajput was using was registered under his name, said the team of Bihar Police, probing his death case, on Sunday.

The team also informed that one of the sim cards that the late actor was using was registered the name of his friend Siddharth Pithani.

"We are now tracking the call detail records (CDRs)," the police said.

The team also said that they will interrogate the family of Sushant Singh Rajput's former manager Disha Salian, who died few days before Sushant's death.

"Even after constant attempts to connect with them on phone, we have failed to establish any contact," it said.

Earlier today, while talking to news agency, the Director-General of Police (DGP) of Bihar Gupteshwar Pandey hinted at the non-cooperation of Mumbai police with his team in their investigation.

"We don't have post-mortem report details, CCTV footage or any information that has been collected by Mumbai Police during probe till now. Our Chief Minister has requested the Maharashtra Chief Minister to ask his police force to cooperate with us," the DGP added.

When asked if Bihar Police want CBI probe into the case, he said, "We are more than capable of doing an unbiased investigation. We hope that Mumbai Police will cooperate with us and we'll conclude the investigation."

Rajput was found dead at his Mumbai residence on June 14. Mumbai Police who was investigating the case had earlier informed that they have recorded the statements of 41 people, including filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, film critic Rajeev Masand, director-producer Sanjay Leela Bhansali, and filmmaker Aditya Chopra so far.

A team of Bihar Police is in Mumbai to probe the actor's death after an FIR was filed by Rajput's father KK Singh against late actor's girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty in Bihar in connection with the death case under several sections including abetment of suicide.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had also registered an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) in Rajput's death case. ED registered the report after an FIR was filed by his father against Chakraborty.

Mumbai, Jul 28: Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Manoj Tiwari has urged Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to look into the case of actor Sushant Singh Rajput's death and direct the state police to register an FIR in this connection.

Wishing Thackeray on Monday on his birthday, Tiwari, who has acted in Bhojpuri films, pointed out that over 40 days have passed since the death of Rajput, but an FIR is yet to be registered.

"Many happy returns of the Day @CMOMaharashtra Shri Uddhav Ji, on this day I request with folded hands to give justice to Sushant who died 43 days ago, but no FIR has been registered so far. I hope you will help. Please do justice to millions of SSR fans," he tweeted.

Bollywood actor Rajput was found dead at his Mumbai residence on June 14, which the police said was a case of suicide. His death had triggered an outcry from several quarters alleging that the late actor, who hailed from Bihar, was a victim of nepotism in the film industry.

The lawmaker from Northeast Delhi's Lok Sabha seat, who visited the deceased actor's family in Patna last month had then said: "Sushant's father and sister requested me to take up the issue and get him justice. It was really a sentimental moment for me".

Previously, Tiwari had demanded a CBI investigation into the matter

According to the police, statements of 40 people including film critic Rajeev Masand, director-producer Sanjay Leela Bhansali, and filmmaker Aditya Chopra and actor Rhea Chakraborty have been recorded in the investigation so far.

Hollywood star Joaquin Phoenix finally ended his dry run at the Oscars as he picked up the best actor trophy for his performance in and as "Joker" at the 92nd Academy Awards.

The 45-year-old actor had earlier bagged a BAFTA, a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award for his turn as a failed, unhinged stand-up comedian who descends into chaos.

In a lengthy and rambling speech, Phoenix touched upon racism, climate change and gender inequality. He also remembered his brother River Phoenix, who died of a drug overdose at the age of 23 in 1993.

"When he was 17, my brother wrote this lyric. He said, 'run to the rescue with love and peace will follow'," Phoenix said. At the Academy Awards and the entire Hollywood award season, Phoenix had emerged as an undisputed frontrunner even though he was up against the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio ("Once Upon a Time in Hollywood"), Adam Driver ("Marriage Story"), "Antonio Banderas ("Pain & Glory") and Jonathan Pryce ("The Two Popes").

An Oscar had eluded Phoenix for the most part of his career, despite his successful collaborations with Ridley Scott ("Gladiator"), James Mangold ("Walk The Line") and Paul Thomas Anderson ("The Master"), all of which had earned him nominations.

But as Arthur Fleck aka The Joker, Phoenix finally managed to break that jinx and became the second actor to win an Oscar for playing the DC comic book villain after the posthumous best supporting actor win to Heath Ledger in 2008.

As Joker, Phoenix took a deep dive into character, capturing its essence as well as maniacal spirit in both body and soul.

He lost 52 pounds to get into the physicality of Fleck and turned to a pathological disorder to get his distinct laughter right.

Phillips wrote the part keeping Phoenix in mind though the actor took some convincing to play the role.

Phoenix started the film's festival circuit tour on a positive note at Cannes last year that followed by stops at Venice and Toronto.

The film had also courted controversies, owing to its theme of gun violence in the movie as well as Phoenix's temperamental press tour that saw him walking out of an interview midway.

But critics and the fans loved the actor's riveting turn in the movie and his pointed speeches.

At the Golden Globes, he called out the industry for its insensitivity towards climate change and pulled up his peers for using private jets for travel, while at the SAGs, he joked how he would always lose a role to DiCaprio and asked Christian Bale to deliver a bad performance for once in his career.

In his acceptance speech at the BAFTAs, Phoenix acknowledged the lack of diversity in the nominations, calling himself a part of the problem. Phoenix's career most praised performances include "Signs ", "We Own the Night", "Two Lovers", "The Immigrant", "Her", "You Were Never Really Here" and "Inherent Vice".
