Mumbai, Jun 22: The sessions court on Friday rejected the bail application filed by Suraj Pancholi who was arrested in connection with actor Jiah Khan’s suicide. The court rejected his plea after the counsel for the complainant as well as the prosecution opposed it.
The court accepted the prosecution’s claims that there was enough evidence against Suraj. Earlier, he was remanded in judicial custody till June 27.
According to the defence counsel, the entire case was made up and there was no evidence against Suraj to prove him guilty in the suicide case. Also, the note which was recovered from Jiah’s house didn’t have any signature and didn’t reveal the name of the accused, the defence argued, adding, it was a case to damage the image of Suraj and his father Aditya Pancholi.
However, the assistant public prosecutor, advocate Jyoti Sawant, opposed the bail application on the grounds that there was enough evidence with the police to prove the charges slapped on Suraj.
“The letter, which Jiah had allegedly written, claims that Suraj assaulted her, raped her and, at times, even hit her in front of other people. There is enough evidence against Suraj. We have the call data records which prove that Suraj had exchanged a number of calls with Jiah. Also, he had sent a number of messages to her, which he deleted. Thus, he tried to destroy evidence against him. Also, we need to send the letters to handwriting experts. If Suraj gets bail at this stage, he can tamper with evidence and there is a possibility he may try to leave the country,” Sawant argued.
