'Salman drove at 100 kmph despite driver’s warning'

Salman_droveMumbai, Jun 25: Sessions judge UB Hejib on Monday upheld the order of the Bandra metropolitan magistrate court invoking the charge of culpable homicide against Bollywood actor Salman Khan in the 2002 hit-and-run case in which a pavement-dweller was killed and four others injured.

As per the prosecution’s case, they were sleeping on a pavement in Bandra when Khan allegedly rammed his Toyota Land Cruiser into a bakery on the night of September 28.

The magistrate court at Bandra had, on December 31 last year, ordered to charge the actor for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, along with the other charges.

Under this section, the court may award Khan punishment up to 10 years of imprisonment if proven guilty.

The actor had moved the sessions court against the order contending it was passed in a hurry and the magistrate did not consider the cross-examination of the prosecution witnesses.

In a detailed order, the sessions court on Monday rejected the actor’s contentions, observing that he was warned by his bodyguard to drive slow as he was drunk. Yet, he drove at 100 kmph, which resulted in the mishap, the court said.

The sessions judge upheld the magistrate court’s observation that the actor had requisite knowledge about his actions, and said if the court is satisfied and the evidence is well-founded and trustworthy, the court need not get into multiple corroborations.

Rejecting the revision application, the court observed, “I find it unable to subscribe to the argument of the defence that the magistrate court has come to the wrong conclusion as it has not permitted the accused to lead the evidence of defence witnesses.”

The court has asked the actor to appear before it within a month.

The case is adjourned to July 19, when the trial may begin.

Mumbai, Jul 27: Action director Parvez Khan, known for his work in films like Sriram Raghavan's Andhadhun and Badlapur, died on Monday after suffering a massive heart attack. He was 55. 

Parvez, who worked in the industry since 1986, was rushed to Ruby Hospital after he complained of chest pain, his longtime associate Nishant Khan told PTI. "He suffered a major heart attack in the morning. He was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead. He didn't have any health issues but felt chest pain last night," Nishant said.

Filmmaker Hansal Mehta, who worked with Parvez in the National Award winning 2013 drama Shahid, said the action director was extremely skilled. "Just heard that action director Parvez Khan is no more. We had worked together in Shahid where he executed the riots sequence in a single take. Very skilful, energetic and a good man. RIP Parvez. Your voice still rings in my ears," Hansal tweeted. 

Parvez started his career by assisting action director Akbar Bakshi in films like Akshay Kumar's Khiladi (1992), Shah Rukh Khan's Baazigar (1993) and Bobby Deol-starrer Soldier in 1998. It was with Ram Gopal Varma's Ab Tak Chhappan in 2004 that he started working independently and went on to have a long-standing collaboration with filmmaker Sriram Raghavan in films such as Johnny Gaddaar (2007), Saif Ali Khan-starrer Agent Vinod in 2012 and Badlapur, featuring Varun Dhawan. He is survived by wife, son, daughter-in-law and a granddaughter.

Washington, May 26: Making a slight change to the name of their newborn, Tesla CEO Elon Musk and his singer girlfriend Grimes have now named their first child X AE A-Xii.

The difference is only in the numeral part of the name which is now written in the Roman format.

Earlier this month, the celebrity couple hogged headlines for naming their son X AE A-12.

The change in the name came when an Instagram follower of the Canadian singer asked if she had considered changing the name of the child and she replied with, "X AE A-Xii."

However, the performer didn't provide further insight concerning the reason behind the change.

Canadian singer Grimes gave birth to her first child on May 4.

The 32-year-old had earlier taken to Twitter and explained the meaning of the baby's name.

Mumbai, Jul 18: Actor Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and daughter Aaradhya Bachchan on Friday were shifted to a city hospital, almost a week after they were tested positive for COVID-19. Aishwarya, 46 and eight-year-old Aaradhya were diagnosed with coronavirus on Sunday, a day after the actor’s father-in-law, megastar Amitabh Bachchan, and husband Abhishek Bachchan tested positive for the COVID-19.

The mother-daughter duo was self-quarantining at home till now.

“Both Aishwarya and Aaradhya were admitted to Nanavati hospital today. They are fine,” hospital source said.

Aishwarya needed medical attention, another insider said.

Amitabh, 77, and Abhishek, 44, both are already in the isolation ward of Nanavati hospital.

Since his diagnosis, Amitabh has been regularly updating his admires about his health on social media.

“In happy times, in times of illness, you our near and dear, our well wishers, our fans have ever given us unstinting love , affection care and prayer .. we express our bountiful gracious gratitude to you all .. in these circumstances hospital protocol, restrictive,” the screen icon tweeted on Friday evening.

According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), coronavirus cases in Mumbai rose to 98,979 with 1,228 new patients being reported on Friday.

Death toll due to the pandemic rose to 5,582 with 62 new fatalities being recorded.
