On the festival of sacrifice, Muslims across Kerala, Karnataka focus on flood relief

Bengaluru/Kasaragod, Aug 22: Muslims across rain-ravaged Kerala and various parts of Karnataka, on the occasion of Eid-ul-Adha (Bakrid) offered special prayers and contributed generously towards the flood relief and rehabilitation works in both the states.

Crores of Muslims across Indian on Wednesday celebrated the festival of sacrifice. A large number of Muslims took part in the mass prayers in all the prominent mosques across Karnataka. In Bengaluru, Hubballi, Bidar, Vijayapura and other districts of Karnataka, some of the mosques and Eidgas attracted thousands devotees.

In most of the mosques and Eidgahs in both the states devotees contributed towards the relief fund after Eid prayers. Clerics had earlier warned the Muslims against extravagance and urged them to be generous towards the needy and the victims of calamities.

While special addresses by the clergy and other religious scholars called the devotees to mop up resources, both in cash and essential materials, the Eid-ul-Adha celebrations saw special prayers preaching harmony and compassion.

Several Islamic organisations have been focusing on the need to help thousands of families ravaged by floods in Kerala and Kodagu. Special committees set up by mosques across Dkshina Kannada, Udupi and Kasaragod districts took the lead in collecting cash and materials.

Addressing the faithful at the Hira Masjid complex in Kanhangad, Aliya Arabic College Principal T K Muhammed Ali urged society to take cues from natural calamities, by seeking to lead a simple life strictly in tandem with the forces of nature.

“It is high time we made an introspection into the futility of erecting concrete jungles by razing hills and reclaiming wetlands, eventually leading to sharp climatic changes,” he said.

Wayanad, Jul 6: DM Education and Research Foundation (DMERF), headed by Dr Azad Moopen, has come forward to handover DM WIMS Medical College, Nursing and Pharmacy Colleges and its associated institutions in Wayanad to the Kerala Government. 

According to Azad Moopen, Managing Trustee, DMERF, the Kerala Government has been deliberating to set up a medical college in the area over the last 7-8 years to address the challenges being faced by the local population due to lack of local availability of advanced healthcare facilities under the government sector. 

The handover by DMERF would address the Government's need. DM WIMS is one of the few NABH accredited medical colleges in the country, he said.

The DM WIMS Medical College and its associated institutions were established by the DMERF Trust 10 years ago to help the backward community of the district. 

Run in a charitable manner, the medical college has a capacity of 150 seats and has seen two batches of doctors graduate from the institution. With a total built up area of 14 lakh sq feet, it also has a 700-bed super-specialty hospital catering to the local community and helping in training healthcare professionals, a 100-bed specialty hospital, a pharmacy college, and a nursing college.

A new medical college by the government will require substantial investments and minimum of 5 years to become functional. “We think that DM WIMS can cater to the requirement of the government and setting up another medical college might not be required to cater to the existing population,” he said.

Moopen also announced a donation of Rs 250 crore out of the total investment in the institutions to the government to provide treatment to the needy population in the backward, landlocked district and to train good quality doctors from the State.

Mangaluru, Jun 9: Two days after he went missing under mysterious circumstances, a 33-year-old man was today found dead on the banks of Netravati river at Ullal Hoige on the outskirts of the city.

The deceased has been identified as Chethan Acharya. A missing case was registered on Tuesday morning at Ullal police station.

It is suspected that Chetan might have committed suicide due to depression. 

The missing case was later converted into the case of unnatural death. Investigations are on.

Mangaluru, Feb 13: The Customs Officers of Airport Team-II at Mangalore International Airport (MIA) on Thursday intercepted a passenger who attempted to smuggle gold worth Rs 9.39 lakhs.

The team led by Rajesh Poojary nabbed the passenger who attempted to smuggle 233.18 grams of gold strips concealed inside a rechargeable emergency light and solar sensor wall light.

The officials said a passenger named Mohammed Mahir Patla (24) from Kasaragod, who arrived from Dubai yesterday evening by Air India flight number IX384 attempted to smuggle the gold.
