Finally, Delhi HC grants bail to D K Shivakumar

New Delhi, Oct 23: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday granted bail to Congress leader and former minister D K Shivakumar, who was arrested in connection with money laundering case.

Justice Suresh Kumar Kait passed the order with the condition that Shivakumar has to give Rs 25 lakh bond and surrender his passport. The court also directed Shivakumar to attend the investigation whenever the ED issues summons. 
 
Shivakumar, arrested on September 3 in the money laundering case, filed bail application in the Delhi High Court after the trial court rejected his plea.

In the High Court, the former minister has cited medical reasons as one of the grounds for securing bail. The Congress leader also said that he is a seven-time MLA and was not a flight risk.

He added that the case was based on documentary evidence and there was no ground to keep him in custody. Besides, he said, he has no criminal antecedents.
 
However, the ED opposed his plea, saying if bail was granted to the accused in the middle of the investigation, he may influence the witnesses and tamper with the evidence.
 
Justice Kait, who heard the matter, had reserved the judgement on October 17.

Congress MP D K Suresh, brother of Shivakumar who was present in the court hall, cried after hearing the court order. Jubilant Suresh also hugged advocates and Shivakumar followers.

New Delhi, July 29: The government of India today announced Unlock 3.0, lifting of night curfew from August 1 and opening of yoga institutes and gymnasiums from August 5 while educational institutes will remain closed throughout August.

According to the Unlock 3.0 guidelines issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the lockdown in containment zones will be extended until August 30. The new guidelines will be in effect from August 1.

The operation of Metro rail and international flights will remain suspended. Cinema halls, swimming pools, entertainment parks, theatres, bars, auditoriums, assembly halls and similar places will remain shut. Large gatherings are also prohibited.

Yoga institutes and gymnasiums will start operating from August 5 for which the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare will be issuing Standard Operating Procedures. 

Independence Day celebrations will be held with social distancing norms in place.

Restrictions on the movement of individuals during the night (Night curfew between 10 PM and 5 AM) have been removed.

According to the order, states have been given powers to prohibit certain activities outside containment zones or impose such restrictions as deemed necessary based on their assessment of the situation.

"However, there shall be no restriction on inter-state and intra-state movement of persons and goods. No separate permission/approval/e-permit will be required for such movements," the order said. 

In the previous two Unlock guidelines, the government had substantially opened various activities.

Bengaluru, May 28: A thousand government schools in Karnataka are set to get Englishmedium sections from this academic year (2020-21). These institutions will function in both English and Kannada medium.

The decision was taken by primary and secondary education minister S Suresh Kumar and officials of the education department at a meeting on Wednesday.

Suresh Kumar said dualmedium will help improve the standard of schools and enable their development. The poorest of the poor spend almost 40% of their income on their children’s education in private schools. With the introduction of dual-medium, the government hopes such families will be able to save their earnings, he said. These schools will impart lessons in both English and Kannada. They will also provide textbooks in both languages.

‘Kannada must for all’

The meeting reviewed implementation of the compulsory Kannada Language Learning Act, 2015. Officials from the Kannada Development Authority were present at the meeting who claimed that some private schools have failed to implement the Act properly.

“Action will be taken against such institutions. Every child studying in schools across the state must learn Kannada,” Kumar said at the meeting.

Hassan, May 8: A newly married couple accidentally fell into the Hemavathi river and drowned while clicking selfies near Henneli village in the district, police said on Friday.

The deceased were identified as Kritika (23) of the same village and Artheesh (27) of Belur taluk in the district.

They got married on March 20. Both were working in Bengaluru and were in the village due to the lockdown.
