Five killed in cracker unit explosion

Puducherry, Oct 10: Five persons were killed and 11 others, including six women, sustained injuries when a large stock of explosives blew up in a cracker manufacturing unit in Thuruvai at Villupuram district on Sunday.

The identity of the victims was not known.

The police gave the names of the injured as Vasu (23), Parvathy (63), Saravanan (33), Malarkodi (50), Velu (38), Vasantha (45), Poovatha (52), Ramar (38), Pachaivazhi (50), Kalimuthu (50), and Kannagi (40).

All the injured have been admitted to the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) here. JIPMER sources said the condition of one of the injured is serious.

According to the police, a case has been registered against N. Ramesh of Vanur who was the owner of the cracker manufacturing unit.

A group of people were engaged in manufacturing crackers when the accident occured, the police said. The cracker manufacturing unit was razed to the ground in the impact of the explosion.

Velu, a resident of Anaiyur in Sivakasi district,who is among the injured, told The Hindu that they would come to Thuruvai to manufacture crackers during Deepavali season every year.

Recounting the accident, he said: “We were drying the crackers outside the godown when we heard the noise. The crackers started bursting owing to heat around 4 p.m. I fell unconscious when debris hit me. I do not know what happened later,” he said.

Six women injured

Rajesh Kanna.M., tahsidhar of Puducherry, said among the injured, six women were from Ariyankuppam in Puducherry .

Villupuram District Collector L. Subramanian said that they were trying to ascertain the identity of the dead. A probe would be conducted to find the cause of the accident. The bodies had been shifted to Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS).

Khammam, Jun 29: In an outrageous incident, some youths beat up a monkey and strung it up on a tree to death while also releasing dogs to attack it in Ammapalem village in Telangana's Khammam district.

A video of the heinous incident of animal cruelty has surfaced on social media, in which the monkey is seen hanging by a rope from a tree, desperately flailing its limbs while a couple of dogs attempt to pounce on and torment the hapless simian. After a while, several men are seen in the video approaching the animal with long sticks.

Forest officials have charged one villager Venkateshwar Rao under Wildlife Protection Act along with the other accused and arrested them. They were released on bail on Saturday and are set to be summoned for questioning by forest officials.

Rao had spotted the monkey, which had entered his residence apparently in search of food and beat it with a stick and hung it from a tree with the help of his friend.

In the video of the incident, Rao could also be seen instructing his pet dogs to bite the monkey, which was fighting for its life.

Nagpur, Apr 5: A 23-year-old man allegedly committed suicide in Imambada area in Nagpur on Saturday due to financial distress, police said.

Nikhil Gavhane, who worked in a grocery shop, hanged himself as he had taken money from a person and was stressed over repayment, an official said.

"He was depressed since a week," the Imambada police station official said.

Bhubaneswar, Jul 5: Odisha Police have arrested five persons including groom for gross negligence and violation of COVID-19 guidelines during his marriage procession in Berhampur.

"A case has been registered for violation of COVID-19 guidelines for organising a marriage procession with more than 50 guests in the premises of a hotel. They disregarded the compulsory use of mask and flouted social distancing norms," DIG Central Zone Satyabrata Bhoi said.

The incident happened on July 2.
"The case has been registered at Gopalpur PS under section 188/269/270 IPC, R/W Sec- 3 Epidemic Disease Act, and 34 IPC. Two vehicles used in the procession have also been seized. the arrested persons will be produced in the court," he added.

The District Collector has sealed the hotel for violating the COVID-19 norms.

Following the incident, the Chief Minister's office tweeted: "Odisha is in a crucial phase in the fight against COVID-19, hence, it is very essential that we all obey guidelines and regulations issued by State Government to contain the spread of COVID-19. Violation of the same would lead to strong action."
