Bengaluru, Jul 12: Five men were killed on the spot when the car in which they were travelling collided head-on with a lorry on Kanakapura main road, near Kanakapura in Ramanagaram district, on Tuesday evening.

The police have identified four of the victims as Chandrashekar, a resident of Vidyaranyapura in Bengaluru, Raju of Andhra Pradesh, the driver of the car, Santhosh and Sunil Kumar. The identity of another victim is yet to be established, the police said. All the five bodies have been shifted to Kanakapura government hospital. The police initially suspected that there could be a child inside the car as there was a cradle. But, later they confirmed that there was neither a baby nor a woman in the car.

According to the police, the accident occurred around 7.30 pm on National Highway 209 at Huchchammanadoddi near Thoppuganahalli petrol bunk. The car was heading towards Bengaluru. It came beneath lorry and was crushed due to the impact.

The bodies of the victims had to be extricated using metal cutters. The police used cranes to lift the lorry to remove the car that was stuck beneath it. “There was blood everywhere in the mangled car and as it was dark, we could not get any mobile phones or other clues to identify the victims. We are also clueless about where they were coming from. But it looks like the car was headed towards Bengaluru,” a senior police officer said.

The lorry driver suffered a fracture in his leg and an ambulance rushed him to a nearby hospital. Vehicular movement on the Kanakapura main road was disrupted for an hour and the police diverted the traffic. The Kanakapura traffic police have registered a case and are investigating.

A case of murder has been registered against inspector Raghu and sub-inspector Rakesh C for the alleged custodial death of Munikulla on Friday afternoon, Superintendent of Police, Bengaluru rural district, Ravi D Channannavar told reporters.

Alleging that Munikulla was a victim of police high- handedness, Hoskote MLA Sharath Bachegowda said he had lodged a complaint with the state DGP Praveen Sood demanding a CID inquiry into the case.

An FIR was registered against Munikulla on Friday evening based on a complaint by the cashier of the liquor store, who had claimed that the CCTV footage showed victim's involvement.
