Former Bihar MP sentenced to life imprisonment in 22-year old murder case

Patna, May 23: RJD leader and ex-MP MP Prabhunath Singh was on Tuesday sentenced to life imprisonment in connection with 22-year old Mashrakh MLA Ashok Kumar Singh murder case.RJD

Ashok Singh, then an MLA of Lalu Prasad's party Janata Dal, was murdered at his official residence in Patna. Prabhunath was a Janata Dal (U) MP when this incident happened.

The verdict was pronounced by 9th Additional District and Sessions Judge, Hazaribagh, Surendra Sharma. The court also pronounced life imprisonment to Prabhunath's brother Deenanath Singh and nephew Ritesh Singh.

The Judgement was pronounced through video-conferencing at Hazaribagh jail where all three convicted persons are lodged since last Thursday when the court found them guilty and sent to the jail.

In 1997, the Patna high court, after hearing a plea of the murdered MLA's widow, had transferred the case to Hazaribagh district court from Patna district court.

Prabhunath Singh is a former MLA from Mashrakh assembly constituency in Bihar and former Lok Sabha member from Maharajganj in Bihar. Prabhunath was very close to former PM Chandrashekhar.

New Delhi, Jul 19: At least six people were killed and 20 injured when a bus overturned after colliding with a private vehicle at Agra - Lucknow Expressway in the wee hours of Sunday. According to initial reports, the bus carrying around 40 passengers toppled after hitting a stranded SUV at around 5 am, 122 km from Lucknow.

A police team reached the spot within a few minutes of the accident and rescued the injured with the help of locals. They were rushed to a nearby hospital. “Five passengers were killed on the spot while another died minutes after reaching the hospital,” Hindustan Times quoted Kannauj DSP Amarendra PD Singh as saying.

Around 20 other passengers have also sustained injuries who were admitted to the hospital, the police said. The bus had started from Bihar's Darbhanga and was en route to Delhi. "The private bus was coming from Darbangha and going to Delhi when it hit a car. Both the vehicles came down from the highway," a senior police official told news agency ANI.

Meanwhile, authorities are trying to ascertain the identity of the deceased. UP CM Yogi Adityanath expressed over the loss of lives and directed officials to ensure all help to the victims.

New Delhi, Jan 2: A 20-year-old man set his motorcycle on fire after he was challaned by the traffic police in south Delhi's Greater Kailash area on Wednesday, police said.

Vikas, a resident of Sangam Vihar, was challaned by the traffic police for riding the motorcycle without helmet, a senior police official said.

The traffic police challaned him and impounded the motorcycle, following which Vikas set the bike on fire, the officer said.

A case has been registered and the accused arrested, the officer added.
