French Open shock: Roger Federer withdraws from Roland Garros due to back injury

New Delhi, May 20: 17-time Grand Slam winner Roger Federer on Thursday shocked the tennis world by announcing his withdrawal from the 2016 French Open.

FrenchThe Swiss maestro, in a Facebook post, said that he is "still not 100%" and was worried that he "might be taking an unnecessary risk by playing" at Roland Garros.

Federer has played a record 65 consecutive Grand Slam tournaments. And for the first time in over 16 years, a Grand Slam will not have Federer competing.

The 34-year-old was withdrew from the Madrid Masters two weeks ago with a back problem, and lost in the third round of last week's Rome Masters to Dominic Thiem, appearing not fully fit.

Federer has struggled with injury this year, having undergone knee surgery after January's Australian Open. However, the former world number one returned for Monte Carlo Masters in April and reached the quarter-finals, where he was beaten by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

The Swiss' withdrawal from the tournament, which starts on Sunday, means that nine-time champion Rafael Nadal will be promoted to fourth seed in Friday`s draw behind Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and defending champion Stan Wawrinka.

It also means that Nadal cannot meet Djokovic or Murray before the semi-finals.

Federer completed a career Grand Slam when he captured the 2009 title in Paris.

His overall record in the French capital stands at 65 wins against just 16 losses with four defeats in finals, all at the hands of Nadal with the most recent back in 2011.

Federer`s absence is another blow to Roland Garros organisers who have seen two-time women`s champion Maria Sharapova sidelined through a doping suspension while former world number one Caroline Wozniacki is out injured.

Former India opener Kris Srikkanth on Sunday said he would prefer K L Rahul over Shikhar Dhawan in the T20 World Cup later this year.

Dhawan is returning to international cricket after a long gap. During the senior left-handed batsman's absence, Rahul has emerged as one of the top contenders for the opener's slot in limited-overs cricket.

"Runs against SL (Sri Lanka) don't count. If I was chairman of selectors, I won't pick Dhawan in the T20 WC squad. There is no competition between him and Rahul. Only one winner," Srikkanth said on Star Sports.

Before the series, the 34-year-old Dhawan said that he is looking forward to a "new start" in a new year and wants to win the World Cup for India.

Lahore, Apr 27: Pakistan batsman Umar Akmal has been banned from all forms of cricket for three years for failing to report spot-fixing offers, the Pakistan Cricket Board announced Monday.

Umar, who turns 30 next month, pleaded guilty to not reporting the fixing offers which led to his provisional suspension on February 20 this year.

New Delhi, Feb 20: Grappler Divya Kakran on Thursday became the second Indian woman to win a gold medal at the ongoing Asian Wrestling Championship.

Divya, a bronze medallist at Asian Games 2018, earned her first gold by winning all her four bouts against Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Uzbekistan and Japan.

Her final bout against Naruha Matsuyuki of Japan was the closest one but she managed to outclass her opponent 6-4 to seal her name on the gold medal. The 68 kg category was played in round-robin format as only five wrestlers were in the fray.

India is likely to add some more medals to its tally when Nirmala Devi, Pinki, and Sarita go out to grapple for the yellow metal in their respective weight categories.

Three-time Commonwealth championship gold medallist, Nirmala Devi (50 kg) first defeated Munkhnar Byambasuren of Mongolia in the quarterfinals by 6-4 to reach the semis.

In the semi-finals, Nirmala got the better of Dauletbike Yakhshimuratova of Uzbekistan by 10-0 and will play against 2018 Under-23 World Champion Miho Igarashi of Japan for the gold medal.

Pinki (55 kg) started her day on a winning note against Shokhida Akhmedova of Uzbekistan by 12-4 in round 3 and lost to Kana Higashikawa of Japan to enter the semis where she defeated Marina Zuyeva of Kazakistan by a score of 6-0.

Pinki will play in the gold medal bout against Dulguun Bolormaa of Mongolia.

Sarita (59 kg) will now face Battsetseg Altantsetseg of Mongolia in the gold medal bout after winning against her opponents in the qualifiers, quarterfinals and semi-final by a score of 10-0, 11-0 and 10-3, respectively.
