September 21, 2015

Los Angeles, Sep 21: Breaking its four-year-old jinx, fantasy epic "Game of Thrones" bagged the outstanding drama gong at the 2015 Emmy Awards, along with three other honours, tying with "Veep" whose trophies included the outstanding comedy series.

"Game of Thrones", HBO's darling series, was a favourite this year as it bagged nods in all the 24 nominations. Since its first season in 2011, the globally popular series has been in the outstanding drama race at the Emmys but failed to taste success until this time.

It defeated biggies like "Better Call Saul", "Downton Abbey", "Homeland", "House of Cards", "Mad Men" and "Orange is the New Black" to bag the coveted trophy.

The other three major awards for the show came courtesy Peter Dinklage's performance as Tyrion Lannister, winning him best supporting actor in a drama series, creators David Benioff and DB Weiss's work earning them best writing and helmer David Nutter bagging the outstanding directing honour.

Benioff and Weiss thanked the show's cast and crew and HBO for taking a chance on them and "believing in dragons."

Dinklage said he did not have anything prepared and gave a shout-out to the other nominees — particularly Better Call Saul's Jonathan Banks, who was the odds-on favourite to win.

Backstage, the showrunners were asked by reporters why Thrones finally won this year.

"We knew that there would be some resistance at first to a show set in this genre... We knew it would take a while," Benioff said.

"But we'd hoped if we did our jobs and if we were fortunate enough to be blessed with the cast and crew that we were blessed with and if we got lucky, that we'd get there eventually."

The series has beaten 1999 serial political drama "West Wing" for the most Emmy wins for a TV series in a single year.

HBO struck gold at Emmys as besides becoming the best comedy series, its show "Veep" swept awards in categories-- outstanding lead actress for Julia Louis-Dreyfus, outstanding supporting actor for Tony Hale, outstanding writing for Simon Blackwell, Armando Iannucci and Tony Roche.

For his portrayal of Don Draper, the creative director of an advertisement agency, in period drama "Mad Men", Jon Hamm took home the trophy for outstanding actor in a drama series.

While Viola Davis bagged the outstanding actress in a drama series award for "How to Get Away With Murder", becoming the first African-American woman to receive an Emmy.

Actor Jeffrey Tambor won the outstanding lead actor in a comedy series for his performance on "Transparent". Uzo Aduba bagged the outstanding supporting actress in a drama series honour for her work in "Orange Is the New Black".

Allison Janney bagged the outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series for "Mom". HBO's "Olive Kitteridge" won the outstanding miniseries award and also three other honours.

The 67th annual Primetime Emmy Awards took place at the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles.

Mumbai, Apr 2: Ramayan, the over three-decade-old TV series based on Hindu mythology, garnered 170 million viewers in four shows over the last weekend in its new avatar, the BARC said on Thursday.

The show was relaunched last Saturday amid the gloomy times of lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and a lot of thrust laid by the government machinery to popularise the series.

BARC's chief executive Sunil Lulla said the numbers notched up by the series was a bit surprising and called the move as a brilliant one by the Prasar Bharti.

He said eventually, we will also see advertisers flock the series which will be running for a few more days.

The inaugural show of the series on Saturday morning had 34 million viewers glued to their TV sets watching and enjoyed a rating of 3.4 per cent, while a telecast the same evening had 45 million viewers and a rating of 5.2 per cent.

Kochi, Jan 6: A trial court on Monday framed charges against Malayalam film actor Dileep and other accused in the case of alleged abduction and molestation of a south Indian actress in 2017.

The actor and nine other accused were present in the additional special sessions court in Ernakulamwhen the charges were framed against them.

All of them have denied the charges.

On Saturday, the Court had dismissed a plea filed by Dileep, seeking to exclude him from the list of accused.

The Court had admitted the prosecution argument that there is prima facie evidence against him in the crime and dismissed the plea of the actor, who is eighth accused in the case.

The court had also not allowed a plea by the actor to grant him 10 days time to file the appeal in a higher court in the light of the Supreme Court order in November 2019 that the trial should be completed in six months.

The court is hearing the case in-camera.

On December 19, Dileep, along with his lawyers and a technical expert, had examined the contents of the electronic records at the closed room of the court.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had directed that the actor be allowed to inspect the records to enable him to present an effective defence during the trial.

In February 2017, the actress was allegedly abducted and molested by the accused.

Seven people, including the key accused 'Pulsar' Suni were arrested in connection with the actress' abduction case.

There are 10 accused in the case.

The entire act had allegedly taken place in a moving vehicle, which was filmed by the accused to blackmail her.

Dileep was subsequently arrested and arrayed as an accused in connection with offences under provisions of the Indian Penal Code and IT Act.

The top court had directed that the trial in case be concluded expeditiously, preferably within six months from the date of the judgement.

A woman judge is hearing the case.

In February 2019, the High Court, while considering a plea seeking to transfer the case to a Sessions Court headed by a woman judge to conduct the trial, had ordered the CBI special court Judge-III Ernakulam Honey M Varghese to complete the trial expeditiously.
