June 26, 2014

Gang-rape viralLucknow, Jun 26: The arrest of three youths, who along with four others had allegedly gang-raped a girl, shot a video and circulated it on a social networking site, led to tension in Shahpur of Muzaffarnagar district.

Though the alleged gang-rape occurred around 10 months ago, the victim lodged a report with the police on Tuesday after the video clipwent viral.

She named seven youths, all belonging to a particular community.

Senior police officials rushed to Shahpur and arrested three of the seven accused, sources said. A massive manhunt has been initiated to nab the others, police said.

In her complaint, the victim said she was travelling on a motorbike with a friend when she was forcibly taken to a forested area near Basdhara village in the district by three youths. She said that four others were already present at the spot.

She was raped and her friend was assaulted by the gang, the victim claimed, adding that the suspects even threatened to upload the video on a social networking site if she went to the police or told her family about the incident.

Local BJP and Bharatiya Kisan Union leaders have demanded imposition of the National Security Act (NSA) against the accused.

They also warned of agitation if their demand was not met by the district administration.

A few days ago, a mentally challenged woman, a mother of seven, was allegedly gang-raped by members of a particular community in Shahpur, triggering communal tension.

Hundreds of people from several villages had held a panchayat after the incident and thrashed the in-charge of Shahpur police station.

They even roughed up other policemen and district officials claiming that there were attempts to hush up the matter.

Last year’s communal riots, which claimed 62 lives and left thousands homeless, were also sparked after a girl was molested by youths of a different community.
