Mangaluru, Jan 22: The coastal city of Mangaluru on Monday woke up to the news of another coldblooded murder. A gang of miscreants hacked a 45-year-old man to death at his home at Tannirbhavi.

The deceased has been identified as Shivaraj, son of Karunakar. He is the brother of rowdy-sheeter Bharatesh, who is also a suspect in Bejai Raja murder case.

Police sources said that the incident took place between 4:30 a.m. and 5 a.m. when Shivaraj was sleeping on the terrace of his house.

They said that three miscreants claimed the terrace and attacked Shivaraj repeatedly with lethal weapons and fled the scene. He was shifted to a private hospital where doctors pronounced him brought dead.

The police have reportedly taken one person into custody for questioning in connection with the murder. It is assumed that the killing is more of due to local disputes and differences with hostile local members, said a senior police officer and rubbished the communal angle. More details are awaited.

Our cops are not so efficient. They are investigating only after murder. They are not doing precautions well

Mysuru, Mar 18: Even though the migration season is coming to end and the winged visitors are set to fly back, the water bodies where most birds nest and breed are under close surveillance with the report about spread of bird flu in Mysuru as unusual death of birds can be a cause for worry and hence the authorities are on high alert.

At Karanji Lake, the birds are watched in detail twice – morning and evening. If any sick bird or dead bird is noticed, the Zoo Vets are alerted. So far, no such birds had been sighted. The surveillance data is maintained every day. Intensive surveillance and passive surveillance is done.

Zoo Authority of Karnataka (ZAK) Member Secretary B P Ravi said the birds are doing well and there is no cause for worry with their health monitored constantly along with tests on the bird droppings done every month at the National Institute of High-Security Animal Diseases in Bhopal.

Bengaluru, Jan 6: There is a wide spread criticism by the Janata Dal(S) and Congress leaders over a proposal to rename Ramanagaram district as New (Nava) Bengaluru, Karnataka Chief Minister CM Yediyurappa said on Monday.

“An unnecessary discussion on renaming Ramanagaram is under way. There is no thought before the government over renaming," The CM accused the Congress and JD(S) leaders of indulging in baseless discussion to mislead the people and to remain relevant. "There is no such agenda before the government. It is a joke that JD(S) and Congress leaders are starting a fight over it.”

The Chief Minister’s clarification came after criticism by former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy, who carved out the Ramanagaram district when he was Chief Minister, and former Minister DK Shivakumar whose Kanakapura constituency is in Ramanagaram district, after Deputy Chief Minister CN Ashwath Narayan said Ramanagaram could be renamed as Nava Bengaluru to increase investments prospects.
