Tragic Ali Hussain Khan looks like a wizened old man – yet he is only 14.
Heartbreakingly, he’s also the last surviving child of SIX siblings hit by a rare, crippling ¬and incurable disease.
But despite suffering such a terrible loss, brave Ali refuses to give up hope a miracle cure will be found so he will reach adulthood.
Ali was born with progeria, a ¬genetic condition that ages his body eight times faster than normal.
There are only 80 known cases of progeria on the entire planet.
Yet Ali, his two brothers and three of his sisters had the condition, which ¬usually kills victims by the age of 14 with a heart attack or pneumonia.
But Ali refuses to give up hope a miracle cure may be found, even though he knows his life could end any moment.
He told the Sunday People : “I very much want to live and I hope there is medicine for my disease out there.
“I’m not scared of death but my parents have suffered a lot.

“I’d love to live much longer for them. I don’t want to burden them with any more pain.”
Dad Nabi Hussain Khan, 50, and mum Razia, 46, from Bihar – the poorest state in India – are first ¬cousins who were the product of an arranged marriage 32 years ago.
When their first daughter Rehana was born in 1983 they had no idea anything was wrong.
It was only after her second birthday when she couldn’t eat or walk properly they visited a local doctor.
But he was baffled and sent them home with a useless medicine.
They went back to the doctor after their son Ikramul was born in 1987 showing the same symptoms – and got the same reaction.
Nabi, who earns £20 a month as a factory guard, said: “The doctors were as clueless as us.
“If one of them had told us our children had some kind of genetic problem and we were connected we’d have stopped having children.”
Daughters Gudiya and Rubina were born in 1989 and 1992, Ali arrived in 1999 and a newborn baby boy died. All had progeria.
But the couple also had unaffected children – Sanjeeda and her sister Chanda are now 20 and 10.
Nabi and Razia only found out about progeria in 1995 after seeing an expert – who told them it was ¬incurable.
Nabi said: “No one in our community ¬believed it.
“Neighbours and extended family tormented us for not getting help for the children – they just couldn’t ¬understand a disease with no cure.”
Meanwhile, life was unbearable for Rehana, Ikramul, Gudiya, Rubina and Ali as they grew up with progeria.
They were ridiculed and bullied till none of them went to school.
Ali, who weighs just 1st 8lbs and is 3ft 7in tall, said: “None of us has had a childhood because we were confined to home.
“We had each other but that was it – we had no life.”
He added: “I’d love to be a normal person who can play, go to school, do some sports, take some risks.”
Gudiya and Rubina both died in 2004 aged 15 and 12. Rehana died three years later aged 24.
But 22-year-old Ikramul’s death in 2009 hit Ali hardest.
He said: “Ikramul was my best friend. He was very strong and didn’t pay any attention to the bullies.
“When he died I cried for weeks and couldn’t eat. But I realised I’d do him a huge injustice if I crumbled.” He added: “I have no one now – but I have to stay strong.
“It’s very lonely living this life since my siblings have gone.
“I’d like to be in the company of others like me again.”
Ali is cared for by expert Dr Sekhar Chattopadyay, who said: “There is nothing similar in the world where five siblings are affected.
“Ali’s parents are related to each other and that could be the reason for the disorder, though they have two children who are normal.
“We’re trying our best to keep Ali mentally and physically fit.
“The average life expectancy is 13 to 15 but let’s hope we can prolong Ali’s to 24 like his brother.”
There are four known cases of progeria in the UK.
They include Birmingham-born Dean Andrews, 21, who is the ¬oldest survivor in Europe.

Boston, Feb 4: Practising yoga may increase levels of a messenger molecule involved in regulating brain activity, and completing one yoga class per week may maintain elevated levels of this chemical, according to a study which may lead to better ways of mitigating depressive symptoms.

The study, published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, assessed a group of 30 clinically depressed patients who were randomly divided into two groups.

According to the researchers, including those from Boston University in the US, both groups engaged in coherent breathing, and Iyengar yoga -- a form of hatha yoga, developed by B. K. S. Iyengar, emphasising on detail, precision, and alignment in the performance of yoga postures.

The only difference between the groups, the scientists said, was the number of 90 minute yoga sessions, and home sessions in which each group participated.

Over three months, they said, the high-dose group (HDG) was assigned three sessions per week, while the low-intensity group (LIG) engaged in two sessions per week.

The participants underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of their brain before the first and after the last yoga session, and also completed a clinical depression scale to monitor their symptoms, the study noted.

Results of the study revealed that both groups had improvement in depressive symptoms after three months.

Their MRI analysis showed that levels of the brain messenger molecule GABA were elevated after three months of yoga, as compared to the levels before starting yoga.

According to the study, this increase was found for approximately four days after the last yoga session, but the rise was no longer observed after about eight days.

"The study suggests that the associated increase in GABA levels after a yoga session are 'time-limited' similar to that of pharmacologic treatments such that completing one session of yoga per week may maintain elevated levels of GABA," explained study co-author Chris Streeter from Boston University.

Providing evidence-based data may help in getting more individuals to try yoga as a strategy for improving their health and well-being, the scientists said.

"A unique strength of this study is that pairing the yoga intervention with brain imaging provides important neurobiological insight as to the 'how' yoga may help to alleviate depression and anxiety," said study co-author Marisa Silveri from Harvard University.

In this study, we found that an important neurochemical, GABA, which is related to mood, anxiety, and sleep, is significantly increased in association with a yoga intervention," Silveri said.

Washington, Feb 21: The fat around arteries may play an important role in keeping the blood vessels healthy, according to a study in rats that may affect how researchers test for treatments related to plaque buildup, as seen in conditions leading to heart attack.

The study, published in the journal Scientific Reports, noted that the fat, known as perivascular adipose tissue, or PVAT, helps arteries let go of muscular tension while under constant strain.

According to the researchers, including Stephanie W. Watts from the Michigan State University in the US, this feature is similar to how the bladder expands to accommodate more liquid, while at the same time keeping it from spilling out.

"In our study, PVAT reduced the tension that blood vessels experience when stretched," Watts said.

"And that's a good thing, because the vessel then expends less energy. It's not under as much stress," she added.

According to Watts and her team, PVAT has largely been ignored by researchers believing its main job was to store lipids and do little more.

Until now, she said, scientists only divided blood vessels into three parts, the innermost layer called the tunica intima, the middle layer called the tunica media, and the outermost layer called the tunica adventitia.

Watts believes PVAT is the fourth layer, which others have called tunica adiposa.

Tunica, she said, meant a membranous sheath enveloping or lining an organ, and adiposa is a synonym for fat.

"For years, we ignored this layer -- in the lab it was thrown out. In the clinic it wasn't imaged. But now we're discovering it may be integral to our blood vessels," Watts said.

"Our finding redefines what the functional blood vessels are, and is part of what can be dysfunctional in diseases that afflict us, including hypertension. We need to pay attention to this layer of a blood vessel because it does far more than we originally thought," she added.

Earlier studies, Watts said, had shown that PVAT plays a role in the functioning of blood vessels, finding that it secretes substances that can cause blood vessels to relax as well as substances that can cause it to contract.

In the current study, the researchers decided to test whether PVAT provides a structural benefit to arteries by assisting the function of stress relaxation.

They tested the thoracic aorta in rats, and found those with intact PVAT had more stress relaxation than those without.

The study revealed that the pieces of artery with surrounding fat had measurably relaxed more than those without.

Watts and her colleagues then tested other arteries, and were able to duplicate the same response.

"It's not something you see only in this particular vessel or this particular species or this particular strain. But that maybe it's a general phenomenon," she said.

Researchers have found that patients with peripheral artery disease or stroke were less likely to receive recommended treatments to prevent heart attack than those with coronary artery disease. All three are types of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

Depending on the location of the blockage, atherosclerosis increases the risk for three serious conditions: coronary artery disease, stroke and peripheral artery disease.

"Our study highlights the need for public health campaigns to direct equal attention to all three major forms of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease," said senior study author Erin Michos from the Johns Hopkins University in the US.

"We need to generate awareness among both clinicians and patients that all of these diseases should be treated with aggressive secondary preventive medications, including aspirin and statins, regardless of whether people have heart disease or not," Michos added.

Since atherosclerosis can affect arteries in more than one part of the body, medical guidelines are to treat coronary artery disease, stroke and peripheral artery disease similarly with lifestyle changes and medication, including statins to lower cholesterol levels and aspirin to prevent blood clots.

Lifestyle changes include eating a healthy diet, being physically active, quitting smoking, controlling high cholesterol, controlling high blood pressure, treating high blood sugar and losing weight.

What was unclear was if people with stroke and peripheral artery disease received the same treatments prescribed for those with coronary artery disease.

This study compared more than 14,000 US adults enrolled in the 2006-2015 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey, a national survey of patient-reported health outcomes and conditions, and health care use and expenses.

Slightly more than half of the patients were men, the average age was 65, and all had either coronary artery disease, stroke or peripheral artery disease.

These individuals were the representative of nearly 16 million US adults living with one of the three forms of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

Compared to participants with coronary artery disease, participants with peripheral artery disease were twice more likely to report no statin use and three times more likely to report no aspirin use.

Additionally, people with peripheral artery disease had the highest, annual, total out-of-pocket expenditures among the three atherosclerotic conditions.

The findings showed that participants with stroke were more than twice as likely to report no statin or aspirin use.

Moreover, those with stroke were more likely to report poor patient-provider communication, poor health care satisfaction and more emergency room visits.

"Our study highlights a missed opportunity for implementing life-saving preventive medications among these high-risk individuals," Michos said.

The study was presented in the virtual conference at the American Heart Association's Quality of Care & Outcomes Research Scientific Sessions 2020.
