Healthcare should reach backward and tribal areas in DK'

Mangalore, June 9: Although Dakshina Kannada stands among the best performing districts in the country in terms of health services, there is still scope for improvement in backward areas and tribal areas of the district, said K.N. Vijay Prakash, Chief Executive Officer of Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat, here on Friday.

Addressing the gathering at the World Health Day programme, whose celebrations were delayed by around two months from April 7 because of “unavoidable circumstances”, Mr. Prakash said: “The district has a much lower Infant Mortality Rate, Maternal Mortality Rate, and birth ratio compared to the rest of the country. However, we must do more to take these services to the Malekudiyas, and to naxal-affected areas,” he said.

The programme, held at the zilla panchayat office complex, with the theme “good health adds life to years” focussed on tackling the problems of an ageing population. “The average life expectancy in the country is increasing, and by 2050, senior citizens will form a sizeable chunk. We have to be equipped to deal with the illnesses and problems of old age,” said O.R. Srirangappa, District Health Officer.

Suliya taluk bagged the most awards while the Primary Health Centre in Ullal was declared the “best in the district”.

Lady Goschen Hospital in Mangalore was named the best Government Hospital in the district.

Mangaluru to get 15 smart CCTV cameras in sensitive places

Mangaluru, Jan 5: To keep an hawk's eye on the city, 15 prominent and crowded junctions in the city will have the most advanced CCTV cameras installed under the Smartcity project.

The junctions are-- Bejai KSRTC, Pumpwell, Vamanjoor, Padil, Mullikatte, Bejai, Bendoor, Falnir, Morgans Gate, Kulashekara-Shakthinagar Cross, Kottara Chowki, Kuntikan, Rao & Rao Circle, Padavinangady and Kavoor junctions.

According to top police officials, these junctions will receive approximately 75 cameras to check crime and aid in solving the cases of murder and robbery in the city.

A ‘smartpole’ will be installed there with each pole containing about five cameras along with a 360 degree swivelling camera.

Netizens hail Saudi university for sacking professor over hate-filled tweets against Muslims

Newsroom, May 22: Countless netizens including Indians have hailed the action taken by Jazan University of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia against a high-ranking Indian expatriate who had posted called Indian Muslims as radicals.

Social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook flooded with appreciation after the University announced on Twitter that the professor, who had posted objectionable messsages, had been fired. The university, however, did not disclose the name of the professor.

On its Twitter account, Jazan University wrote, “Based on what was monitored by the university about the publication of a contracted faculty member for offensive posts and tweets, his registration has already been folded. #JazanUniversity affirms that it resolutely addresses any perverted or extremist ideas that affect the constants or violate the directions of good leadership.”

After the university’s announcement, many on Twitter posted screenshots of the communal tweets claiming that the professor is Neeraj Bedi and made it clear that the dismissed professor is an Indian.

Bedi has been working as full time Professor in Faculty of Public Health and Tropical Medicine in Jazan University for years.

In his Twitter account, which does not currently exist, he was praising PM Modi and spewing poison against Islam and holding Muslims responsible for the spread of Coronavirus. It is believed that the account was deleted after the protests became severe.

Rs 4,000-cr IMA scam: CBI books senior IPS officers Hemant Nimbalkar, Ajay Hilori

Bengaluru, Feb 4: The CBI has booked Karnataka cadre senior IPS officers Hemant Nimbalkar and Ajay Hilori along with eight others in connection with Rs 4,000-crore I-Monetary Advisory (IMA) scam in which gullible investors were allegedly cheated in the name of Islamic banking, officials said on Tuesday.

The move came after the CBI received an approval from the Karnataka government to proceed with investigation into alleged role of 1998-batch IPS officer Nimbalkar and 2008-batch IPS officer Hilori, they said.

Along with the two officers, the agency has also named the company IMA, its founder Mansoor Khan and others in the case.

The CBI had approached the state government seeking permission to proceed against the two officers who are in senior positions in the Karnataka Police and allegedly helped IMA founder Masoor Khan, they said.
