Heavy rains lash coastal Karnataka, lightning strike kills student in Kasargod

Mangalore, Apr 28: Heavy rains, coupled with lightning and thunder, lashed several parts of coastal Karnataka including the city of Mangalore in wee hours of Monday. rains

A pleasant weather prevailed on Monday morning dipping the temperatures by few notches.

Fortunately, no casualties due to the heavy lightning were reported in the region. But, a house belonging to one Damodar Acharya in Neralakatte in Bantwal talul was collapsed injuring one Chethan.

Water stagnated at low-lying areas in many of the areas in Mangalore.

Also, there has been unexpected rainfall in many parts of the state for the past two days bringing relief to people from the scorching heat.

Casualties

Lightning struck in Kasargod district killing a Plus Two student. The district also saw wide-spread damage due to the heavy wind and lightning accompanying the rains.

D N Naveen, a student of a private college in Vitla town, was killed by the strong lightning while he was in his house at around 9.30 p.m., police said.

His father Dayananda and mother Shalini, who were inside the house, also sustained minor burn injuries.

The house of Sreekanth, a lawyer, at Surlu locality was damaged after a coconut tree broke and fell over the building under the impact of the strong winds.

In a similar incident, a coconut tree fell over a moving car at Kottakanni locality here critically injuring the two occupants of the vehicle. The driver of the car lost his control and the vehicle dashed against the building of a road-side canteen.

The winds also capsized three fishing boats off Kasaba beach here. The locals managed to bring back the boats to the shore by Sunday evening.

Mangaluru, Mar 25 : Taking into account surge of COVID-19  cases in neighbouring districts, Dakshina Kannada district administration has decided to suspend retail sales at Central Market in Mangaluru and public will not be allowed to purchase at Central Market from Thursday.

Proper arrangements have been made for the public to buy from nearby grocery shops from 6 am till 12 noon. 
However strict social distancing has to be ensured by the vendors failing which action will be taken, warned Deputy Commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh. The public are advised to follow social distancing measures.

Bengaluru, Apr 8: Heavy rain lashed Belthangady taluk in Dakshina Kannada district and parts of Udupi district on Tuesday providing much-needed relief to the people from the sultry heat.

Belthangady, Guruvayanakere, Madantyaru, Venoor, Naravi and surrounding areas received rain coupled with lightning and thunder. 

Rain also lashed Karkala, Kundapura, Kollur, Siddapura, Gangolli, Hemmady, Uppunda, Shiroor, Hebri and surrounding areas in Udupi district.

Parts of Malnad --- Koppa, Balehonnur and NR Pura taluks in the neighbouring Chikkamagaluru district --- received good rainfall coupled with lightning and thunder.

The rain has brought a smile on the face of coffee growers as it will help in the blossoming of the flowers in coffee plants.

In Kodagu district, heavy rain lashed Madikeri, Hudikeri, Ponnampet, Srimangala, Siddapura, Galiubeedu, Bapoklu, Talacauvery and Bhagamandala.

Parts of Mysuru city and district, Chamarajanagar, and Hassan received a good spell of rain on Monday night, bringing down the mercury levels.

Heavy rain lashed T Narasipur taluk in Mysuru district and the Kothegala Gram panchayat limits received 7 cm rainfall. Karya village in Nanjangud taluk received 5 cm rainfall.

Male Mahadeshwara Hills in Chamarajanagar district received good rain in the evening. 

Meanwhile, the Agriculture Research Station at Naganahalli has predicted thunderstorms, on April 7 and 8 in the region. The research centre recorded 12 mm rain on Sunday night and 22.5 mm on Monday midnight. 

Moderate to heavy rain, accompanied by strong wind and lightning, lashed some parts of Shivamogga district, including Ripponpet, Sorab, Bhadravathi, Thirthahalli, Sagar
and Shikariput. 

Bhatkal in Uttara Kannada district received heavy rain from 4 to 7 pm. The town had also received the rain for about half-an-hour in the morning.

Hosapete town and the surrounding villages also received the rain. At some places, the rain brought down the branches of the trees. The rain has cooled the mercury level at Hosur, Nagenahalli, Basavadurga, Kamalapur, Hampi and other villages in Hosapete taluk. 

Rain also lashed several places in Ballari district, including the Ballari city. Rain, accompanied by hailstones, brought cheers to the people at Kottur. 

Meanwhile, rain and hailstones have destroyed the standing paddy crop in hundreds of acres of land at Maraladinni, Katagal, Uskihal, Belladamaradi and other villages in Maski taluk of Raichur. The farmers are waiting to harvest the crop.

Udupi, Mar 6: District Health Officer Sudheer Chandra said that health department had compiled a list of foreigners visiting the Temple town Udupi and ensure that they are not infected with Coronavirus.

Addressing media persons at District Government Hospital in Ajjarkad on Friday, he said the Isolation Unit set up with five beds to treat the new Coronavirus infection includes two beds with Ventilator facility. Isolation wards with three beds were set up in Kundapur and Karkala taluks to treat the affected.

In order to prevent the spread of Coronavirus, Committees were formed at District and Taluk level, he added.
